Your flight lands at Jacksonville International Airport (JAX). Northeast Florida Regional Airport (UST) sits 4 miles north of St. Augustine but handles private charters only. Rent a car at the JAX terminal counters and head south on I-95. The first 40 minutes are unremarkable. Pine forests, billboard after billboard. Take Exit 318 onto SR-16 East and the landscape shifts. Live oaks close in overhead, Spanish moss hangs low enough to brush a truck roof, and you'll smell salt air before you see water. That 10-minute stretch from the interstate to the Bayfront is the real arrival. The San Sebastian River appears, then the coquina walls of the Castillo de San Marcos catch afternoon light in warm orange. SR-16 becomes San Marco Avenue as it enters town and drops you at the northern edge of the historic district, a block from the old city gate. If you're arriving after dark, you'll miss the approach entirely, so try to time your landing before 5pm.

Uber and Lyft both operate out of JAX. Expect $55-80 for the ride to downtown St. Augustine, depending on time of day. Late arrivals after 11pm tend to sit at the lower end. The pickup zone is on the ground level of the parking garage across from the terminal. Without a rental car, the walkable core stretches about 20 blocks between the Castillo de San Marcos and the Bridge of Lions. Beyond that, costs add up. A round trip to St. Augustine Beach on A1A runs $15-20 each way. The Sunshine Bus Company covers St. Johns County with hourly service, but routes don't connect well with the tourist district. For lodging, the blocks around St. George Street put you in the pedestrian core, steps from the colonial-era buildings and the Plaza de la Constitución. San Marco Avenue north of the city gate has quieter bed-and-breakfasts, several in restored Victorian houses from the 1890s Flagler era. Vilano Beach, 3 miles north over the Vilano Bridge, has lower-priced motels with ocean views and sits a 10-minute drive from the historic district. St. Augustine Beach on Anastasia Island has more vacation rentals and condo options. One seasonal note. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in by 3pm most days from June through September. They clear in about 30 minutes, but if your flight gets in during that window, expect wet roads on SR-16.

Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB), 60 miles south, is a backup if JAX fares run high. The drive north on I-95 takes 65-70 minutes. Orlando International (MCO) sits 105 miles south, a solid 2-hour drive that only makes sense if you're pairing St. Augustine with a theme-park trip. For everyone else, JAX is the call. If your flight arrives past midnight and you'd rather not drive unfamiliar Florida highways in the dark, the cluster of hotels along Airport Center Drive near JAX runs $90-130 per night.
