When's the best time to visit St. Augustine in 2026?

November is the month to pick for a first visit to St. Augustine. Daytime highs settle around 72°F and humidity falls from the summer's sticky 80-plus percent, and the breeze off Matanzas Bay carries salt rather than the swampy heat of August. Hurricane season formally runs to November 30, though storms that late in the year are rare, and the first two weeks of November are the best of it. Nights of Lights switches on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and from then until January 31 the Plaza de la Constitución and the Bridge of Lions glow under roughly 3 million white bulbs. It looks lovely, but it costs you. On Light-Up Night, US-1 and A1A gridlock, and the downtown parking garage on Castillo Drive can fill by 5pm on Saturdays. If you come after Thanksgiving, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday and leave the car at your hotel.

March and April are the other strong window. Highs run from about 73°F to 79°F, the air is still dry, and at 10am the coquina walls of Castillo de San Marcos feel cool under your palm. Spring is also nesting season at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm on Anastasia Island, where from roughly March to June, roseate spoonbills, great egrets and wood storks build nests in the trees above the alligator pond. You will hear the rookery before you see it, a steady clacking and croaking, and on warm afternoons you will smell it too. The downside is crowds. Spring break fills St. George Street from mid-March, and Easter weekend books out the downtown inns weeks ahead. Friday-to-Sunday rates in the historic district can run 30 to 40 percent above a November weekday. Book a Sunday-to-Thursday stay and walk St. George Street before 10am, while its pedestrian-only shops are still opening.

June through September is the season to avoid. Highs sit near 90°F, and most afternoons a thunderstorm rolls in between 2pm and 5pm, often with lightning that clears the beach at Anastasia State Park. August through October is also the peak of hurricane season, and June and July are when families arrive, so the heat and crowds peak together. If summer is your only option, see the Castillo and the González-Alvarez House in the morning, cross the Bridge of Lions to the beach by noon, and be back indoors by 2pm. Lovebugs swarm in May and again in September, smearing windshields along A1A by the hundreds.

December through February is colder than most first-timers expect, with January highs around 65°F and lows dipping into the mid-40s, so pack a fleece for the ghost tours that leave from St. George Street after dark. The wind on the Bridge of Lions bites at night. Winter's reward is the holiday lights on quiet weekdays, and by late January a table on Aviles Street rarely needs a wait. October sits in between: expect highs near 80°F, Halloween-season demand for ghost tours, some lingering storm risk, and an Atlantic off Crescent Beach that still holds around 77°F that month.
