Is Boston safe?

The one zone we'd route around at any hour is the junction of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, where the South End meets Roxbury. The city cleared the tent encampment there in November 2023, yet open drug use, discarded needles, and a sour chemical smell still cling to Southampton Street and Atkinson Street. Phone maps sometimes send walkers from the South End toward Andrew station on the Red Line straight through it, so check your route before you set off. Elsewhere in Boston the risks are petty. Pickpockets work the Quincy Market colonnade at Faneuil Hall on Saturday afternoons, when the air smells of fried dough and chowder and nobody notices a hand in a tote bag. Green Line trains out of Kenmore after a Red Sox game at Fenway Park run shoulder to shoulder, and the Lansdowne Street bars empty at 2am into a loud, beery crowd. Traffic is Boston's underrated hazard. Drivers here run amber lights and turn left the instant a signal changes, so wait a beat at crosswalks on Tremont Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Night transit is where Boston gets awkward for a solo traveller. The MBTA subway stops running around half past midnight, and no all-night train or bus exists to fall back on, so a late show means a rideshare home. At 1am on Sunday 11 October the city read 7.6°C, feeling like 5.6°C, and the wind off Boston Harbor bites harder on the Seaport's open plazas than that number suggests. When Spamalot lets out of the Wang Theatre on Tremont Street that night, walk two blocks to the Orange Line at Chinatown or the Green Line at Boylston rather than cutting across the Common. Boston's parks close half an hour before midnight, and the Common, a public ground since 1634, has dark stretches along its Charles Street edge where people sleep on benches. The walk we'd do alone at 11pm runs down the Commonwealth Avenue Mall from Arlington Street to Massachusetts Avenue, under old-style lamps with brownstone windows glowing on either side. Charles Street in Beacon Hill and Hanover Street in the North End also stay lit and busy until the bars close. Between December and March, the brick pavements of Beacon Hill turn to sheet ice.

Eating alone in Boston is easier than its reservation culture suggests. Neptune Oyster on Salem Street in the North End runs mostly on walk-ins and seats guests at a narrow bar counter, which suits one person better than two. The Boston Public Market at Haymarket has counter stalls where a solo lunch comes in under $20. For company, the Freedom Trail stretches 2.5 miles from the Common to Charlestown, and a small-group walk on the route, laid out in 1951, puts you among a dozen strangers by 10am. HI Boston at 19 Stuart Street sells private rooms, which dodges the double-occupancy pricing at Back Bay hotels, and its Theater District address keeps that same Orange Line stop a short walk away. The final Boston risk is financial. A US emergency-room visit for a sprained ankle on that winter ice can top $2,000, so buy travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover before you land at Logan.
