Boston's free public spaces do more of the daily work than the city's ticketed attractions get credit for: the parks, squares, gardens, and shoreline the city holds open at no charge to anyone. What follows is twelve of them, ranked, drawn from the civic ground that a visitor can walk into without a ticket, a reservation, or a queue. Some are old, some are small, some are barely more than a paved plaza with a fountain and a bench, but each one earns its place on the list by being a real destination rather than a checkbox on a route map.
