When's the best time to visit Boston in 2026?

Come between mid-September and the last week of October. Afternoons in September reach the low 70s °F, October cools to around 62°F, and the sticky August air that sits over Boston Harbor is gone. By the second week of October, the sugar maples beside the Public Garden lagoon and the hillside trees at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain have turned orange and red, with leaves crunching on the paths. The Freedom Trail runs 2.5 miles along a red-brick line from Boston Common to Charlestown, and it is far easier to walk at 60°F than in a humid 85°F. Drive 40 minutes out to Concord and the farm stands smell of hot cider donuts. The Red Sox regular season usually ends in the last days of September, so an early-autumn trip can still include a night at Fenway Park, with steamed Fenway Franks and the organ playing between innings.

The catch in October is cost. Back Bay and Seaport rooms often run above $350 a night, because conventions, parents' weekends at Harvard and Boston University, and the Head of the Charles Regatta all land in the same few weeks. The regatta takes the second-to-last weekend of October and brings around 11,000 rowers to the Charles River. Book 8 to 12 weeks ahead. You can also stay in Cambridge near a Red Line stop, about 10 minutes from Park Street. Avoid arriving on September 1, when most Allston and Brighton student leases turn over and those streets fill with moving trucks and mattresses left on the curb. Salem is 16 miles north and packed every October weekend for Halloween, so if you want to go, go on a weekday.

Late May through June is the second-best window, with highs in the mid-70s, the Swan Boats paddling the Public Garden lagoon from mid-April into September, and daylight stretching past 8pm. The June trade-off is graduations: Harvard, MIT, Northeastern and a dozen other schools hold commencement between mid-May and early June, and hotel prices jump on those weekends. Marathon Monday falls on the third Monday in April (April 19 in 2027), closes Boylston Street, and fills the Back Bay hotels, so plan around it unless you are coming to cheer. July and August bring stretches of 90°F heat. The salt breeze on a Boston Harbor Islands ferry helps, and on July 4 the Boston Pops play on the Esplanade to crowds in the hundreds of thousands.

January through March is the cheap season, and on a first visit it's the one to skip. Back Bay rooms can fall to half their October price, and on a weekday you'll have the Museum of Fine Arts galleries almost to yourself. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum courtyard stays warm and smells of damp soil and flowers, which is very welcome when the wind is cutting along Long Wharf. Sidewalks turn to grey slush, and one nor'easter can drop a foot of snow overnight and cancel flights at Logan. If winter is your only option, plan the days around indoor sights and have the clam chowder at Union Oyster House near Faneuil Hall. March is still slush rather than spring. Spring starts in late April, when the magnolias bloom along Commonwealth Avenue.
