What's a good 3-day itinerary for Bodrum?

Bodrum Castle anchors everything. The Knights Hospitaller completed the fortress in 1522, partly from marble quarried out of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus itself. Get there at 8:30 AM while the corridors still hold the night's cool. The Museum of Underwater Archaeology inside displays Bronze Age shipwreck finds and a reconstructed Carian princess burial chamber. By 10:30, walk 400 metres south to the Mausoleum site, the Ancient Wonder from 350 BC. To be fair, the remains are modest. A few column drums, foundation walls, and a scale model. Worth 30 minutes, not 60. The ancient theatre on the hillside above seats 13,000 and gives a clear sightline to Kos island, 20 kilometres across the strait. Go before noon while the stone is still cool enough to sit on.

Lunch at the fish market in the old bazaar quarter follows a simple pattern. Pick your catch from the ice trays, hand it to one of the 4 surrounding grill restaurants, and pay a cooking fee of about 150 TRY (roughly $3 at September 2026 rates). The red mullet tends to be the best value. The harbour walk afterward smells of pine tar from the gulet boatyards, and the hulls creak against their ropes through the afternoon heat. Day 2 heads west. Start at the Myndos Gate by 9 AM, the surviving stretch of the city walls Alexander besieged in 334 BC. The stone is warm by mid-morning. From there, 2 kilometres south along the ridge brings you to the row of seven stone windmills between Bodrum and Gümbet, where the Aegean wind hits hard enough to steal a hat. The view runs from the castle below across the open strait.

Drop into Bitez for the afternoon. The beach has coarser sand than Gümbet and water that shifts from green to deep blue about 30 metres from shore. A sunbed pair costs roughly 500 TRY at most beach clubs, and the September sea temperature still holds around 25°C. Dinner at a stone-courtyard restaurant in Bitez village fills the air with rosemary smoke from the slow-cooked lamb tandir, about 450 TRY per plate. Day 3 is a boat day. Standard south-coast cruises leave Bodrum harbour at 10 AM, loop through 4 to 6 pine-fringed coves, and return by 5 PM. The going rate is 800 to 1,200 TRY per person with a basic grilled lunch included. You swim off the stern into quiet inlets where the only sound is the anchor chain settling. The better boats carry 15 to 20 passengers, not 50. Ask at the harbour the evening before.
