How do I get from the airport to Petra?

Your flight touches down at Queen Alia International Airport, about 30 km south of central Amman. Immigration tends to move quickly, maybe 20 minutes on a good day, and the single-entry visa costs 40 JOD ($56) at the counter. From there, every option points south toward Wadi Musa, the small town that serves as Petra's gateway. The critical question is timing. If your flight lands after 4pm, sleep in Amman and head out the next morning. The Desert Highway is unlit south of the capital, and the fatigue from a transatlantic routing through Istanbul or Doha will hit hard once the adrenaline wears off. Arrive before 2pm with a transfer pre-booked, though, and you can reach Wadi Musa by late afternoon. The golden light falling across the sandstone cliffs above town makes the long travel day feel worth it.

Most Wadi Musa hotels will arrange your pickup directly. You email or WhatsApp the property with your flight number, and a driver meets you in the AMM arrivals hall holding a sign. The ride south on Route 15 is flat, fast, and largely featureless, dry plateau and the occasional gas station every 40-50 km. For budget travelers, JETT, Jordan's national coach service, runs one daily departure from its Abdali station in downtown Amman to Wadi Musa at 6:30am, pulling in around 10am. That early departure means you need a night in Amman first if your flight lands in the afternoon or evening. There is no JETT service from the airport itself, so you still need a taxi from AMM to Abdali, about 15 JOD ($21) and 35 minutes through Amman traffic. The return JETT leaves Wadi Musa at 5pm, one departure each way per day.

Renting a car at AMM is the flexible choice if you plan to visit other sites along the route. The Desert Highway, Route 15, is a straight, well-maintained 4-lane road. Budget 3 hours. The King's Highway, Route 35, is slower at 4-5 hours but passes through Dana Nature Reserve, Karak Castle from the 1140s, and the mosaic-filled churches of Madaba. If you have the daylight, the King's Highway is the better drive. You wind through deep wadis with red sandstone walls and pass small villages where the smell of roasting coffee drifts from open doorways. Rental costs at AMM start around 25-35 JOD ($35-49) per day for a basic sedan from Hertz or National at the terminal. Fuel runs about 0.72 JOD per liter. Keep your rental agreement and passport accessible. Police checkpoints south of Tafila are routine and polite, but officers will ask to see documents.

King Hussein International Airport (AQJ) in Aqaba is closer at 130 km, roughly 2 hours by road. Fewer international routes serve Aqaba, but Ryanair flies from several European hubs, and Royal Jordanian connects through Amman domestically. A taxi from AQJ to Wadi Musa runs 40-55 JOD ($56-78). The road climbs from sea level at the Red Sea to over 1,000 meters through dry, copper-colored hills, and you will feel the temperature drop as you gain altitude. In June, Aqaba tends to sit around 40°C while Wadi Musa currently hovers near 21°C in the mornings and reaches 32-34°C by afternoon. Worth noting, the Aqaba route means you can loop in Wadi Rum without backtracking. The desert camp at Wadi Rum lies 60 km south of Wadi Musa, and many travelers run Aqaba to Wadi Rum to Petra over 3-4 days before heading north to Amman.
