What are the best day trips from Athens?

Cape Sounion (70 km south, €6.50 KTEL bus) is the best couples day trip from Athens. Watch sunset behind Kea from the 5th-century BC Temple of Poseidon. Hydra is a car-free island 90 minutes by hydrofoil from Piraeus. Aegina works as a half-day pistachio-and-beach run, 40 minutes by fast ferry, with time to get back for dinner in Psyrri.

Cape Sounion is the best day trip for two people who want to share a single moment. The KTEL Attikis bus leaves from Mavromateon Street in central Athens, takes the coastal route (ask for "paraliaki" at the ticket window), and costs about €6.50 each way. The ride runs 2 hours along the Attic Riviera past Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. Get to the Temple of Poseidon by 7pm in June. The 5th-century BC columns stand on a 60-meter cliff, and the Aegean turns copper below them as the sun drops behind Kea. Wild thyme covers the hillside. You can smell it from the parking lot. The site closes 30 minutes after sunset in summer, so you'll have about an hour up top if you time it right. Honest warning. The terrace directly behind the temple fills with tour groups by 7:30pm. Walk 100 meters south along the cliff path instead. Same view, maybe better, and you'll hear the Aegean rather than selfie-stick chatter. Dinner after at one of the 2 tavernas at the foot of the hill. Grilled red mullet, a half-liter of Attic white wine, two people eating for under €40.

Hydra is 37 nautical miles from Piraeus and feels like a different century. Hellenic Seaways runs hydrofoils that take 90 minutes for about €30 each way. The slower ferry is around €14 and takes closer to 2 hours. No cars on the island. No motorbikes. Donkeys carry the luggage, and their hooves on the stone quay are likely the loudest thing you'll hear in the port. The whole waterfront is maybe 400 meters long. This is the trip for the couple where one person wants to swim and the other wants to sit with a book. Vlychos beach is a 20-minute walk west along the coastal path, all smooth paving stones and bougainvillea walls. The water is clear enough to see the bottom at 4 meters. The swimmer goes to Vlychos. The reader stays at a harbor cafe, orders a freddo espresso for €4, and watches the water taxis come and go. Meet for a late lunch on the western arm of the port. Grilled octopus runs about €14 and arrives charred and tender on a white plate with a lemon half.

Aegina is the low-commitment option, and for couples it might be the smartest. A fast ferry from Piraeus takes 40 minutes and costs around €14 round trip. The regular boat runs 70 minutes for €9. The island grows roughly 80% of Greece's pistachios, and you'll smell them roasting before you clear the gangway. Walk 10 minutes south from the ferry dock to Panagitsa, the small church on the headland with a swimmable beach below. The Temple of Aphaia sits 13 km east on a pine-covered hill, built around 500 BC and better preserved than most temples you'll see on the mainland. A taxi from the port costs about €15 each way. Worth noting for the split-interest couple. If one of you wants a beach morning and the other wants the temple, Aegina is small enough that you split for 3 hours and meet back at the port for pistachio ice cream and a cold Mythos before the 2pm ferry home. You're back in Athens by 3pm with the whole evening free.

Nafplio and Delphi both appear on every day-trip list, but be honest with yourselves about stamina. Nafplio is 140 km southwest, 2.5 hours by KTEL bus from Kifissos Terminal A, about €15 each way. The Venetian old town is worth the ride. Bourtzi fortress sits on an islet 600 meters from shore. Palamidi fortress is 999 steps above the town, slippery in the afternoon heat, and commands a view of the whole Argolic Gulf. You'll need 4 hours minimum in Nafplio itself, which means a 7:30am departure and a 7pm return. That is a 12-hour day. If one of you wilts in 34°C summer heat, this tends to end badly by hour 8. Delphi is worse on logistics, 180 km and 3 hours on the KTEL from Liosion Terminal B at €17 each way. The site and the archaeological museum need 3 hours at minimum. You're looking at a 6:30am departure and a 7:30pm return with no margin. The better play for couples is to spend one night in Nafplio (doubles from around €110 in the old town) and fold in Epidaurus, 30 km east with its 14,000-seat theater from 340 BC, on the way back.
