What follows is a shortlist of twelve public squares, parks, and open ruins that cost nothing to enter, ranked in the order a curious resident would recommend them to a friend with a week and comfortable shoes. Expect two kinds of place: the central and neighbourhood squares (Syntagma, Monastiraki, Omonoia, Kotzia, Klafthmonos, Kolonaki, Avdi, Viktoria) that hold the daily choreography of the city, and the green rooms (the National Garden, Pedion tou Areos, and the new Ellinikon coastline) where the pressure of the pavement drops away. One archaeological square (the Roman Agora) is included because its perimeter reads as clearly from the street as from inside the fence. Best museums
Athens wears its museums the way it wears its hills: built into the city, hard to separate from it. The collections here are not a polite survey of world art; they are the receipts of a civilization that has been documenting itself, on marble and clay and coin, for three thousand years. The twelve below are the ones worth your time. Two of them: the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum: are non-negotiable; the rest reward the visitor who is willing to walk past the obvious. You will find Cycladic figurines, Byzantine icons, inscribed stones, coins, and the everyday clay of an ancient marketplace. Skip the souvenir-shop reproductions in Plaka; the originals are a short walk away, properly lit and properly labelled. Bring water, comfortable shoes, and at least one afternoon you have not pre-scheduled.
