How do I get to Salzburg?

Salzburg's W.A. Mozart Airport (SZG) is small, quiet, and 4 km from the Altstadt. You walk off the plane, cross a terminal that smells like fresh coffee and ski wax, and you're on a trolleybus within 10 minutes. The Obus runs every 10-15 minutes to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof for around €2.70. The catch is that SZG has limited long-haul connections. No flights from North America land here. From London, Eurowings and Ryanair operate direct routes for €40-150 each way, and KLM connects via Amsterdam. Wizz Air serves several central European bases. But if you're coming from the US or Canada, your real gateway is Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport (MUC), 180 km north. From MUC, an S-Bahn to München Hauptbahnhof takes 40 minutes, then regional or EuroCity trains reach Salzburg in another 1.5 to 2 hours for €20-45.

From New York (JFK or EWR), expect 9-10 hours to Munich on Lufthansa, United, or Austrian Airlines, with round-trips running $700-1,100 depending on season. From the west coast, add 2-3 hours and $100-200. Chicago O'Hare has a Lufthansa nonstop to MUC at around 9.5 hours. From London, you have two options worth comparing. Low season for flights into this region runs November through early December before the Christkindlmarkt opens, and again mid-January through March outside February school holidays. Peak pricing hits during the Salzburg Festival in July and August, and the Christmas-to-New-Year window. If you're flying from the US to MUC, Tuesday and Wednesday departures currently tend to run $80-150 less than weekend flights on the same carriers. One more thing.
