What are the best day trips from Salzburg?

Königssee is the single best day from Salzburg for two people who don't agree on what to do. Bus 840 leaves Salzburg Hauptbahnhof roughly every hour, crosses the German border without fuss, and drops you in Berchtesgaden in 50 minutes. From there, local bus 841 or 842 runs to the Königssee boat dock in 10 minutes. The electric boats (around €20 return to St. Bartholomä, around €24 to Salet) are silent. That matters. You hear the water against the hull, the echo demonstration where the boatman plays a trumpet against the Echowand cliff face, and not much else. At St. Bartholomä the onion-domed church sits on a spit of land backed by the Watzmann east face, 1,800 meters of vertical limestone. One of you can hike to the Eiskapelle ice formation under the Watzmann, about an hour each way from St. Bartholomä. The other can read on the lakeshore terrace with a Radler from the Biergarten. The water holds at about 6°C even in July, clear enough to see the bottom at 12 meters. You're back in Salzburg by 6pm with energy left for dinner.

Hallstatt is 75 km southeast, and you should go, but go informed. The train from Salzburg Hbf takes about 2 hours 20 minutes with a change at Attnang-Puchheim. A ferry crosses the lake from the station to the village in 7 minutes (€3.60). By 10am in summer the main Marktplatz is shoulder-to-shoulder with day-tour groups. By 3pm they leave. Take the 6:47am train and you arrive before the crowds. Walk the Echerntal valley trail, which runs flat for 40 minutes and stays almost empty that early. The Beinhaus bone chapel holds 1,200 painted skulls. Eat lunch at Gasthof Zauner on Marktplatz 51 while the tour groups are still milling outside, then catch a mid-afternoon train back. Or skip the early start entirely and go to the Wolfgangsee instead. That's the honest trade-off. Hallstatt is a steep village of 780 residents visited by roughly 10,000 people a day in peak season. The lake is cold, green-black, and smells of Alpine runoff. The setting is real. The crowds are also real.

St. Gilgen sits on the Wolfgangsee, 30 km east of Salzburg. Bus 150 runs there in 50 minutes for about €7 each way. It's the day trip for the couple that looked at Hallstatt's crowd numbers and said no. Mozart's mother Anna Maria was born here in 1720, and the house still stands on Ischlerstrasse. The Wolfgangsee reaches 24°C by late July, warm enough for a proper swim. The Falkensteinwand beach on the north shore has flat rocks for sunbathing and deep water 3 meters from the edge.
