When's the best time to visit Salzburg in 2026?

Salzburg in late May feels different from the city you see in any August photograph. The Salzach runs high with snowmelt off the Untersberg, linden trees along Mirabellplatz carry white blossoms that smell faintly of honey, and you can walk the full length of Getreidegasse without getting pinned behind a tour group every 30 metres. June temperatures average 19-22°C. Salzburg is one of Austria's wettest cities at about 1,200mm of rain per year, nearly double Vienna's total, but the May-June window tends to deliver longer dry spells than midsummer. The funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, which has stood above the city since 1077, has a 5-minute wait in May versus 40 minutes in August. September brings similar conditions, with hotel rates across the Altstadt dropping 25-35% from their Festival-season peak.

The Salzburger Festspiele runs from mid-July through the end of August and it changes everything. Tickets start around €30 for fringe performances at the Landestheater and climb past €400 for the Grosses Festspielhaus. Hotels in Nonntal and Leopoldskron that normally run €120-150 per night reach €250-350 in late July. Rain peaks here too, with August averaging around 150mm. You'll hear thunder cracking off the Mönchsberg cliff face on most summer afternoons, and the wet cobblestones on Universitätsplatz steam in the heat after each downpour. That said, hearing the Vienna Philharmonic perform in the Felsenreitschule, an auditorium cut directly into the rock, might be worth every inflated hotel bill. Book 3-4 months ahead for Festival accommodation. The Stiegl-Keller beer garden on the Festungsberg fills by 6pm during these weeks.

December is cold, beautiful, and crowded on weekends. The Christkindlmarkt on Residenzplatz has operated since 1491 and opens around November 21, closing December 26. The smell of Glühwein and roasted almonds sits heavy in 2°C air, and the stalls sell hand-carved nativity figures and soft Lebkuchen rather than mass-produced trinkets. Salzburg Cathedral, first consecrated in 701, anchors the south side of the square, its copper dome lit against the December dark. Weekday mornings before 11am are the window for breathing room. A second market at Schloss Hellbrunn, about 6km south of the center, runs Thursday through Sunday with fewer visitors. The trick fountains are off for winter, but the courtyard smells of pine and woodsmoke and feels calmer than anything in the Altstadt.

November and January through March are the months to skip on a first visit. November is grey and raw, with the Christmas markets still weeks away. January lows reach -5°C, and many restaurants along Steingasse cut hours or close until spring. To be fair, if you want access to the Ski Amadé resorts 40 minutes south by car, a Salzburg base in February has logic to it. But the city itself goes quiet. The Salzburg Museum on Mozartplatz, open since 1834, keeps regular winter hours, and you could have the Sattler Panorama painting nearly to yourself. Daylight fades by 4:30pm in midwinter, which leaves limited time for the Kapuzinerberg viewpoints or the fortress hill on foot.
