Where should I stay in Doha?

Stay near Souq Waqif or in West Bay for a first visit to Doha. Souq Waqif puts you within 800 meters of the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche, with rooms from $80 per night. West Bay has the big-chain towers at $150-350. Both connect to the Red Line metro, which runs to Hamad International Airport in under 25 minutes.

The area around Souq Waqif is the pick for a first trip to Doha. You walk out onto Al Souq Street and the smell of oud and roasting Arabic coffee hits before you clear the first alley. The restored market stays open until 10pm most nights, and the Museum of Islamic Art sits 800 meters north on its own peninsula, where I.M. Pei's limestone facade has been catching the Gulf light since 2008. Msheireb, the low-rise district directly south of the souq, has newer hotels in the $80-160 range with clean lines and that cold-marble-lobby hush Doha does well. Temperatures here reach 45°C by July. But Souq Waqif's covered walkways trap shade, and the museum's interior runs cool enough for a 2-hour visit without thinking about the heat outside. Msheireb metro station on the Red Line connects to Hamad International Airport in about 20 minutes. A taxi from the airport to this area costs 50-70 QAR, roughly $14-19 at the current rate of 3.64 QAR to the dollar.

West Bay is Doha's tower district, a 4-kilometer strip of glass and steel along the northern Corniche. The Marriott Marquis, St. Regis, and InterContinental all sit here, at $150-350 per night depending on the month. The area feels corporate on Fridays. Quiet. Almost eerily so past the Corniche promenade. Sidewalks are wide and scrubbed clean, lobby air-conditioning hovers around 21°C, and you hear fountain motors more than car horns. The tradeoff is character. West Bay has polished hotel restaurants but nothing like the 25-QAR lamb machboos you'll smell charring at a Souq Waqif side-street grill. That said, if you want a rooftop pool, a reliable gym, and a 10-minute Karwa taxi to anything on the peninsula, West Bay delivers on all three. West Bay metro station is on the Red Line, one stop from Katara Cultural Village.

The Pearl-Qatar is a man-made island about 6 kilometers north of West Bay. Apartment-style hotels run $120-250 per night, and Qanat Quartier along the island's northern edge has a restaurant strip where the buildings are painted in terracotta and dusty pink. The area tends to suit families and visitors staying 5 nights or more. You'll find a Lulu Hypermarket for groceries and a small public beach at Qanat Quartier's waterfront. Worth noting, though. The Pearl has no metro station. You depend on taxis or Karwa ride-hailing, and a trip to the Museum of Islamic Art takes 25-30 minutes by car. Lusail, further north near the 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium that hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, has newer hotels at $90-140 per night. But the dining and walkability still lag behind the older districts. Give Lusail another 2-3 years before it becomes a comfortable base.

Book 3-4 weeks ahead between October and March, when Doha temperatures drop to 20-25°C and the city fills with conferences and the Qatar Grand Prix weekend at Lusail International Circuit. Summer rates from June through September fall 30-40% from peak, but the 36°C morning air currently feels like 39°C with 41% humidity, and you'll plan every outing around air-conditioned interiors from noon to 4pm. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel bars across Doha, with a pint running 50-70 QAR ($14-19). The Doha Metro Red Line is the only line most visitors need. It connects Hamad International Airport to Msheireb, the network's interchange hub, then runs north through West Bay to Lusail, all for 2 QAR per ride. The National Museum of Qatar, which opened in 2019 near the Corniche's southern end, is a 15-minute walk from the Souq Waqif area and worth a half-day on its own.

Recommended neighborhoods

  • Souq Waqif / Msheireb

The best base for a first visit. Walk 800 meters to the Museum of Islamic Art, ride the Red Line metro from Msheireb station, and find hotels from $80. The souq's covered alleys have Doha's best street-level energy after sundown.

  • West Bay

Doha's high-rise hotel corridor along the Corniche. Chains like the Marriott Marquis and St. Regis at $150-350. Corporate feel, but reliable pools, gyms, and a direct Red Line metro stop to the airport.

  • The Pearl-Qatar

Man-made island 6km north of West Bay with apartment-style hotels from $120. Suits families and stays of 5 nights or more. No metro station, so you'll rely on Karwa taxis for everything off-island.

  • Lusail

North of Doha near the 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium. Hotels from $90 offer better rates than West Bay, but dining options and walkability are still thin. Better value than character for now.

Skip these areas

  • Industrial Area — Worker housing and warehouses south of central Doha. No hotels worth booking, no restaurants aimed at visitors, and a 40-minute taxi from Souq Waqif or any major sight.
  • Near Hamad International Airport — The airport sits on reclaimed land east of the city with nothing walkable nearby. The Red Line metro reaches Msheireb in 20 minutes, so staying close to the terminal saves you nothing.
Typical price per night: $80-$350
