How do I get to Doha?

Hamad International Airport (DOH) sits 15 km south of West Bay, Doha's main hotel and business district. It opened in 2014 and replaced the old Doha International that had been running past capacity since the late 2000s. When you step off the jet bridge, the terminal hits you with air conditioning cranked to about 18°C. Outside, the 40°C tarmac smells of hot asphalt. The arrivals hall is oddly hushed for a building this size. Immigration moves fast for most Western passport holders, typically 10-20 minutes, since Qatar waived visa requirements for 95 nationalities in 2017. Qatar Airways uses DOH as its sole global hub with nonstop routes to over 170 cities. No secondary airport serves Doha. Every commercial flight into Qatar lands here.

From New York JFK, Qatar Airways runs the 13-hour nonstop at $800-1,300 round-trip depending on season. From Washington Dulles and Chicago O'Hare, Qatar Airways also flies nonstop at similar fares. From London Heathrow, count on 7 hours with Qatar Airways or British Airways for £400-700 round-trip. From Sydney, the nonstop runs about 14.5 hours on Qatar Airways at AUD 1,200-2,000. Mind you, DOH is one of the largest connecting hubs between Europe and Southeast Asia, so you'll sometimes find fares from secondary European cities routed through Doha that undercut direct flights from closer airports. If you're already in the Gulf, the drive from Saudi Arabia through the Abu Samra border crossing puts you about 100 km from central Doha. The crossing takes 30 minutes on a quiet morning, closer to 2 hours on Thursday evenings when weekend traffic backs up. Saudi SAPTCO runs buses from Riyadh to Doha in about 7 hours for QAR 100 ($27). No direct road connects Qatar to Bahrain yet. The long-discussed Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Bridge has been stalled since the early 2010s. Cruise ships dock at Doha Port near the Old Doha district from November through April, with MSC and Costa on Arabian Gulf itineraries. From the airport, the Doha Metro Red Line reaches Msheireb station near Souq Waqif in 20 minutes for QAR 2 ($0.55). Taxis to West Bay hotels run QAR 50-70 ($14-19) on the meter. If you land between June and September, you'll walk out of the terminal into air that feels thick and heavy, like an oven door opened into a steam room. Temperatures currently sit around 36°C at 8 AM, with humidity pushing the feels-like to 39°C. By midday in July, 48°C readings are normal. The trade-off is real. Off-season flights drop 30-40%, and hotels in West Bay that charge QAR 800 ($220) per night in January fall to QAR 450 ($124) in summer. If your itinerary is mostly indoors (the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif's restaurants, the malls), summer math works. Skip it if you planned beach days at Katara Beach or desert drives to the Inland Sea.
