Where should I stay in Vestmannaeyjar?

Vestmannaeyjar has maybe 15 places to sleep on the whole island, and they're all on Heimaey within a 10-minute walk of each other. That sounds limiting until you realize the town itself runs about 800 meters from the harbor to the residential edge. Pick somewhere near the harbor and you're within 5 minutes of the Herjólfur ferry terminal and the handful of restaurants that open for dinner. Hotel Vestmannaeyjar is the only proper hotel on the island. Summer rates run 25,000-50,000 ISK ($200-400) per night. It looks like a 1970s conference center from outside, which it partly is. The rooms are clean, the breakfast is Icelandic-standard (skyr, smoked fish, rye bread with butter thick enough to leave teeth marks), and the upper floors give you a view of Eldfell's rust-red slopes.

Guesthouses and hostels are the better value. Private rooms in the 3-4 guesthouses along the harbor streets run 15,000-25,000 ISK ($120-200) per night, and at least one hostel offers dorm beds near 5,000-7,000 ISK ($40-56). Most sit within a 3-minute walk of the harbor, and you'll hear fishing boats clanking against the dock if you leave a window cracked overnight. Worth noting, the wind on Heimaey is constant and cold even in mid-June. Today it feels like 5°C with 91% humidity at 6 AM, and that's a normal June morning here. A room facing east, away from the prevailing westerlies, keeps the rattling to a tolerable level at night. Several Airbnb-style rentals have appeared in the last few years, typically older Icelandic houses with corrugated-iron siding painted in faded reds and blues, heated by geothermal water that carries a faint sulfur smell from the tap.

Herjólfsdalur, the valley 2 km southwest of town where the annual Þjóðhátíð festival draws up to 16,000 people each first weekend of August, has the island's campsite. A tent pitch runs about 2,000-3,000 ISK ($16-24) per person per night, with basic shower blocks and a cooking shelter. The valley sits inside old crater walls that block most of the gale, so it's noticeably calmer than town. That said, you'll walk or drive the 2 km back for dinner, and after 10 PM on an island of 4,500 residents the streets are quiet enough to hear your own footsteps on wet pavement. If you're camping, bring a 4-season tent. The 3-season dome that survived Þingvellir will get its poles bent on Heimaey.

Book early for the June-August window. Heimaey's 15-odd properties fill fast, and the Þjóðhátíð weekend sells out months ahead. The Herjólfur ferry from Landeyjahöfn takes 35 minutes and runs between 4 and 7 times daily, with the fuller schedule in summer. Flights from Reykjavík domestic airport take 25 minutes on a prop plane that seats about 19. Either way, you arrive to the smell of salt air and dried fish from the harbor sheds, the sound of Arctic terns screaming overhead, and a cold sideways rain that finds the gap in your jacket collar. The Herjólfur cancels occasionally in rough weather between October and March, so build one buffer day into your schedule if you're connecting to a Keflavík departure.
