How do I get from the airport to Vestmannaeyjar?

VEY is one of Iceland's smallest commercial airports, a single-room terminal on a flat stretch of ground about 2 km south of town. No baggage carousel, no shop, no coffee counter. You walk onto the tarmac, collect your bag from a cart beside the plane, and that's it. Eagle Air operates the only scheduled service, with small prop planes that seat about 9 passengers flying to Reykjavík's domestic airport. This is not Keflavík. If you flew into Iceland internationally at KEF, you need to travel about 50 km into Reykjavík and then reach the separate domestic terminal on the city's west side to catch your VEY connection. Eagle Air runs once or twice daily in summer, less in winter. Cancellations happen frequently when wind crosses about 30 knots, which on Heimaey is most weeks. If your flight gets scrubbed, the airline rebooks you or arranges ferry passage.

Turn left out of the terminal and walk downhill toward the harbor. The route follows residential streets on Heimaey's south side, past corrugated-iron houses in deep reds and faded blues, surfaces worn soft by decades of salt spray and sideways rain. On a clear day, Eldfell's dark volcanic cone fills the skyline to your northeast, still warm underfoot in places 53 years after the 1973 eruption. The walk takes about 20 minutes. No taxi rank, no bus. Most guesthouses will send someone to collect you if you phone ahead when you land. Heimaey is roughly 6 km long and 3 km wide. You will not need a car.

To be fair, the airport question is almost academic for Vestmannaeyjar. Most visitors arrive on the Herjólfur car ferry from Landeyjahöfn, a small terminal on the mainland's south coast about 130 km east of Reykjavík. The crossing takes 35 minutes over water that tends to be choppy. Walk-on tickets cost around 1,500 ISK, roughly $12. The ferry runs 4 to 6 times daily in summer and docks at Vestmannaeyjar's harbor, right at the northern edge of town. You step off the ramp, smell the diesel and salt from the harbor sheds, and you're already where you need to be. In rough weather, service diverts to the older port at Þorlákshöfn, which stretches the crossing to about 3 hours. Landeyjahöfn opened in 2010 on an exposed black-sand coast, so wind delays are not unusual there either. If driving from Reykjavík, budget 90 minutes to reach the terminal and add 30 minutes for check-in.

Wind at Heimaey hits the moment you step outside, whatever your arrival method. Even in mid-June, the temperature sits around 10°C, and wind chill drops the feel closer to 5°C. The salt air carries a mineral bite off the North Atlantic. Pack a windproof shell and skip the umbrella. Heimaey's gusts will snap it inside out. Once in town, Heiðarvegur runs through the small commercial center with a grocery store, a couple of restaurants, and the Eldheimar volcano museum, built around a house excavated intact from the 1973 lava. Card payment works everywhere on the island. ISK cash is unnecessary for anything short of a donation box at the stave church, a timber replica completed in 2000 near the harbor.
