When's the best time to visit Vestmannaeyjar in 2026?

June and July are the right answer for a first visit to Heimaey, the only inhabited island in Vestmannaeyjar. The world's largest Atlantic puffin colony is nesting by then, and the birds sit in the grass on the cliff edges at Stórhöfði, close enough to hear their low growl. You'll smell the colony before you see it: the guano reek mixes with diesel and fish from the harbour plants on Strandvegur. Daytime highs sit around 11 to 13°C, and the wind off the Atlantic makes it feel colder. Late June brings near-continuous daylight, so a 10pm climb up Eldfell, the volcano that erupted in 1973, works fine, and the tephra still crunches like coarse black sugar underfoot while patches near the summit stay warm to the touch. Herjólfur sails into Landeyjahöfn on the south coast most days in summer, and the crossing takes about 35 minutes. That short, dependable crossing is the main reason summer beats every other season here.

August splits in two, and the first half is a trap for first-timers. Þjóðhátíð, Iceland's biggest outdoor festival, fills the Herjólfsdalur valley on the first weekend of August, bringing in roughly 15,000 people, several times the island's population of about 4,400. Ferry seats and every guesthouse sell out months ahead, and the white tents and the singalong around the bonfire run all night. Come for it or avoid it entirely. Late August into September is the opposite case, and probably the island's most memorable season: the pufflings leave their burrows at night and are pulled toward the street lights in town instead of the sea, local kids collect them in cardboard boxes and throw them off the cliffs at Hamarinn the next morning. You might be handed one. The adult puffins have mostly left by mid-August, so this window trades the colony for the rescue.

November to February is when Vestmannaeyjar works against you. The weather station at Stórhöfði records some of the highest wind speeds in Europe, the rain comes in sideways at 2 or 3°C, and December gives you about five hours of daylight. The ferry is the sharper problem: sand silts up the harbour at Landeyjahöfn, and the swell there closes it often enough that Herjólfur reroutes to Þorlákshöfn, a crossing of around 2 hours 45 minutes in open Atlantic water that leaves plenty of passengers seasick. If your trip falls in winter, check Herjólfur's sailing notice the evening before and plan a day indoors at Eldheimar, a museum built around a house dug out of the 1973 ash.

For a summer trip, set aside a full day and one night at minimum. Day-trippers miss the late-evening light on Elephant Rock off the western shore. Seljalandsfoss and the smaller Gljúfrabúi, hidden in its rock cleft, sit about 20 minutes' drive from Landeyjahöfn on Route 1, so stop there on the way to the ferry. A packable rain jacket earns its place even in July. Gjábakkafjara on the east side of the island catches spray on calm days too.
