Seven hours is the honest floor at Pudong International. Immigration queues at PVG run 20 to 45 minutes depending on the time of day, and you'll want 90 minutes back in the terminal before an international departure. The Maglev to Longyang Road costs 50 CNY, about 7.45 USD at the current exchange rate, and departs every 15 to 20 minutes. From Longyang Road, Metro Line 2 continues to Lujiazui in 12 minutes or People's Square in roughly 30. Both the Maglev and the metro have bilingual English-Chinese signage, so navigating solo is straightforward even on a first visit to China. On anything under 7 hours, stay airside. Terminal 2 has a serviceable food court on the departures level and quiet seating areas past security.

With 7 to 9 hours, stay on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River. Lujiazui is one metro stop past Longyang Road on Line 2, and from the station exit you're standing at the base of the Oriental Pearl Tower. It opened in 1998 and stands 468 meters tall. The observation deck costs 120 CNY and rarely has queues before 10:00 on weekdays. From the terrace, the entire Bund waterfront stretches along the opposite bank, hazy with humidity on a summer afternoon or clean-edged in winter. Walk 10 minutes south to the Shanghai World Financial Center, completed in 2008, where the sky bridge at 474 meters feels noticeably cooler than street level even in August. For lunch alone, the basement food hall in IFC Mall has counter-seat noodle stalls with no reservation friction. A bowl of congyou banmian, the city's scallion oil noodles, costs about 35 CNY and arrives in under 3 minutes, glossy with rendered lard and tangy with black vinegar.

Ten hours or more opens up Puxi, the western bank. From Lujiazui, Line 2 runs under the river to Nanjing East Road station in about 6 minutes. The Bund is a 5-minute walk east from there. Late August in Shanghai means temperatures near 33°C with thick humidity, so an evening walk along the stone promenade is far more comfortable than a midday one. The 1.5-kilometer waterfront passes the former HSBC Building, built 1923, and the Fairmont Peace Hotel, built 1929. Well-lit and patrolled, the promenade feels safe for solo walkers past midnight. Near the southern end, the air carries the smell of river water and grilled corn from street vendors. Yu Garden sits 15 minutes south on foot from the Bund's midpoint. The garden costs 40 CNY and closes at 17:00, but the surrounding bazaar runs until 21:00. At Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant on the bazaar's ground floor, a bamboo steamer of 10 xiaolongbao costs 18 CNY. Expect a 15 to 20 minute queue at lunch, worth it for dumplings that arrive almost too hot to hold, thin skin barely containing a rush of pork broth.

A friendly stranger approaches in English, suggests tea, and the bill hits 2,000 CNY. If someone stops you on the street to chat about tea, walk away. That is the scam. Google Maps does not work in China without a VPN. Download Amap before you land. It has English transit directions for Shanghai's metro. ATMs in the PVG arrivals hall dispense CNY, and the China Unicom SIM vending machine on the arrivals level sells a tourist package at 50 CNY for 1 GB over 7 days.
