The budget number breaks down to a hostel dorm near Wulin Gate or along Hefang Street at ¥40-60/night ($6-9), three street-food meals averaging ¥15 each ($2.20), and metro rides at ¥3-7 per trip ($0.45-1). West Lake, the reason most people come to Hangzhou, costs nothing to walk around. Most scenic lakes in Zhejiang province charge ¥60-150 ($9-22) for waterfront access. West Lake charges ¥0. The midrange tier puts you in a 3-star room along Nanshan Road or in the Xihu District for ¥250-400/night ($37-59), with sit-down Hangbang cuisine at ¥50-80 per head ($7-12) and enough DiDi rides to skip the metro when it hits 35°C in July.
