Mid-September through November is when Hangzhou works best for a first visit. Daytime temperatures along West Lake settle between 15°C and 25°C, and you can see Baochu Pagoda from the Broken Bridge without squinting through the summer haze. The osmanthus trees around Manjuelong Village bloom in October. The paths between Sudi and Bai Causeway fill with a thick, honeyed scent that locals call guìhuā xiāng. Hotel rates on Nanshan Road drop roughly 20% after the Golden Week peak (October 1-7), so mid-to-late October hits the sweet spot. Worth noting, the Qiantang River tidal bore peaks around the Mid-Autumn Festival in September. You can watch it from Liuhe Pagoda, built in 970, where the bore sends a wall of brown water upstream at 40 km/h.

Late March through May is the other good window, and it has one advantage autumn lacks. Longjing Village, about 5 km southwest of the lake, harvests its first-flush Dragon Well tea in early April. The pre-Qingming picking runs from late March to April 4, and a 50g tin of the top grade costs ¥300-800 at the village's roadside stalls. That's roughly $45-120 at 6.77 CNY per dollar. You'll smell the Longjing leaves roasting in flat iron pans before you see the terraces. That said, Hangzhou's spring rain is real. A walk from the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, founded in 1929, to the China National Tea Museum feels less like sightseeing and more like wading through warm soup at 35°C. August is marginally better but still hits 38°C on bad days. The only noon relief near West Lake is the Hupao Spring temple complex, where shade and running water bring the temperature down a few degrees. Mind you, the June-August low season has its perks. For December and January visitors, the trade-off is solitude and 30-40% lower room rates. The Liangzhu archaeological site, about 18 km northwest of the city center, gets a fraction of its spring visitors.
