When's the best time to visit Hangzhou in 2026?

Late October through November is the window we would book. Daytime highs fall from about 24°C in late October to roughly 15°C by the end of November, and the sticky humidity that sits on West Lake all summer finally lifts. In the second half of November the plane trees on Nanshan Road and Beishan Street turn gold, and the old ginkgo near Lingyin Temple drops yellow leaves across the stone courtyards, where they crunch underfoot. The trade-off is fog: on still November mornings the lake can sit under a grey haze until midday, so save the Leifeng Pagoda climb for after 2pm, when it usually clears. Stay away during the national holiday at the start of October. West Lake can log close to a million visitors on a single day that week, the Bai Causeway becomes a slow-moving queue, and hotel rates around Hubin can double. Book a Hubin or Beishan Street hotel by August for late-October dates.

April is the honest runner-up. Highs sit around 20 to 22°C, peach blossom and willow line the Su Causeway, and the pre-Qingming Longjing harvest runs through the tea terraces at Meijiawu and Longjing village, with pickers on the slopes from first light. Family tea houses in Meijiawu will pan-fire a batch in a hot wok while you watch, and the leaves crackle and smell of toasted chestnut. Top-grade Mingqian leaves often run 3,000 yuan or more per jin (500 g), about US$450 at current rates, so buy 50 grams instead of a full bag. April's catch is rain, with something like 12 to 15 wet days in the month, and the Qingming holiday around 4 to 5 April also fills the Su Causeway and the China National Tea Museum with domestic visitors. Pack a light rain shell and aim for weekdays in mid to late April. May stays pleasant until about the 20th, when Hangzhou's heat starts building.

Skip June through August if you can. The plum rains, called meiyu, usually arrive in mid-June and hang on into early July, leaving the lanes off Hefang Street smelling of wet stone and mildew. July and August bring highs of 34 to 36°C with heavy humidity, and a typhoon in August or September can halt West Lake boats for a day. If summer is your only option, the lotus beds at Quyuan Fenghe bloom pink through July, and the lake is quietest before 7am. Winter in Hangzhou is a fair gamble: January highs hover near 8°C, and the damp cold bites harder than that number implies, while many older guesthouses have weak heating. What you get in return is the emptiest West Lake of the year, and after a rare snowfall the Broken Bridge on the Bai Causeway looks like the scene on every Hangzhou postcard. Chinese New Year, in late January or February, closes many small restaurants for about a week while staff go home, so check the date before booking.
