They'll claim to be Jinan University students practicing English, then steer the chat toward 'traditional culture' and walk you to a tea house on a nearby lane. The bill lands between ¥800 and ¥2,000 (roughly $120 to $300) for lukewarm oolong worth ¥15 at any neighborhood shop. The house and the 'students' split a 50x markup. 'Bu yong, xie xie' and keep walking. Fake Buddhist monks near Guangxiao Temple on Guangxiao Road run the same move. They press a red bracelet into your palm and request a ¥100 donation before you can hand it back.

Taxi drivers at Baiyun International Airport's Terminal 2 quote flat fares of ¥200 to ¥300 for the 28km ride into Tianhe District. The metered fare runs ¥100 to ¥130. Insist on the meter, or take Metro Line 3 from Airport South Station into central Guangzhou for ¥7. The Metro runs until around 23:30 on most lines and covers the city more thoroughly than any taxi. Didi works at Baiyun but requires a Chinese phone number and either WeChat Pay or Alipay, both of which need a Chinese bank card to activate. If you haven't sorted mobile payments before landing, the metered taxi queue is your realistic option. Avoid the unlicensed black cars outside Terminal 2's arrivals hall. No insurance, no meter, no recourse.
