Is Chengdu good for solo travelers?

Chengdu rates 7.2/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and we count it among the easiest big Chinese cities to visit alone. Teahouses in People's Park seat single drinkers without fuss, and chuan chuan skewer shops charge per stick, so you eat exactly as much as you want. Hot pot is the meal that defeats a party of one. English thins out after 10pm, so keep a translation app on hand.

Most solo diners in Chengdu give up on hot pot. Many restaurants on Yulin Road and around Chunxi Road set a two-portion minimum, and the split yuanyang pots are sized for four. Chuan chuan xiang solves it: you pull skewers from a glass fridge, drop them in shared broth, and pay roughly 0.5 to 1 yuan a stick, so dinner tends to land near 40 yuan. The broth is still the real thing, smelling of beef tallow from the doorway, and the Sichuan pepper numbs your lips within three bites. Tea is easier still. At Heming Teahouse in People's Park, a lidded bowl of jasmine costs around 20 to 30 yuan, and the bamboo chairs sit close enough that strangers share tables. Retirees play mahjong there all afternoon, the tiles clacking steadily, while ear cleaners move between the tables, twanging steel tuning forks.

Mix Hostel sits on Xinjie Houxiang beside Wenshu Monastery, and that is where we would send a first-timer. Its common room fills after dinner, and the front desk has long organised shared trips to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which the city has run since 1987. Get to the gate at the 7:30am opening, because by late morning most pandas are asleep in the shade. For the Leshan Giant Buddha, roughly two hours south, a small-group tour splits a driver's fare that would sting on a solo budget. Evenings work differently. Little Bar on Yulin West Road is the folk venue named in Zhao Lei's song 'Chengdu', and the crowd of 20-somethings there talks to whoever sits down.

Getting around after dark worries most first-timers, and Chengdu handles it well. Metro Line 1 runs straight through Tianfu Square, and Line 18 links Tianfu International Airport to the city, about 50km away, with last trains leaving between about 22:30 and 23:00 depending on the line. After that, use Didi, which has an English interface inside Alipay, and foreign Visa and Mastercard cards now link to Alipay, which settles most payment worries. Google Maps is unreliable here: download Amap or use Apple Maps. If you arrive late at the airport, use the official taxi rank and refuse anyone who approaches inside the terminal. The weather was clear and 21.6°C on 19 October, and that kind of mild night makes walking home from the Wenshu Monastery area a pleasure.

Single supplements barely exist in Chengdu because Chinese hotels price by the room: a 'dachuang fang', the big-bed room, serves as the single. Around Chunxi Road in Jinjiang District it usually costs 250 to 400 yuan, roughly USD 37 to 60. The bigger trap is licensing. Some budget hotels and hostels still cannot register foreign passports, so check the property policy on Trip.com before you pay, not at the desk at midnight. Hostel private rooms at Mix Hostel tend to run 150 to 200 yuan. On a long stay, isolation is the real risk, and Tongzilin, two stops south of Tianfu Square on Line 1, has the densest cluster of Western cafes and long-term foreign residents.

Safety notes

Violent crime against visitors is rare in Chengdu. The real hazards are silent e-scooters on pavements, the 'practise English over tea' bill scam near Chunxi Road (500 yuan and up), and unlicensed airport drivers. Women travelling alone report Taikoo Li comfortable past midnight, though Jiuyanqiao's riverside bar strip gets rowdy after 1am, so book your Didi from the main road.
