For a slower day, Pingle Ancient Town is 65 km southwest, about 90 minutes by bus from Xinnanmen station (¥18). The tea houses along the Baimo River move at a different speed than Chengdu. Sit under the covered bridge, order a ¥10 pot of jasmine, and watch the river go by. It is not exciting. That might be the point after three days of Sichuan peppercorn and museum queues. Luodai, a Hakka settlement 20 km east, is closer but tends toward weekend crowds and loud souvenir hawking.
