Can I leave the airport on a layover in Chengdu?

Yes, if you have eight hours or more. Most international flights now land at Tianfu International (TFU), putting you a little over an hour from Tianfu Square by Metro Lines 18 and 1, and that is enough time for a teahouse and a bowl of noodles before you head back. Many passports qualify for China's 240-hour visa-free transit, but check yours first.

Here is how the eight hours add up. Most international routes moved from Shuangliu to Tianfu (TFU) in 2021, and arrival immigration takes 30 to 60 minutes, longer still in the transit-visa queue. The Line 18 express reaches Chengdu South Railway Station in about 35 minutes, and Line 1 takes roughly 10 more to Tianfu Square; the metro costs around CNY 10 to 15, under US$2.50 at 6.69 yuan to the dollar. Double that for the return, then keep 3 hours at TFU before an international departure, because exit immigration and a second bag screening back up at evening peaks. That leaves about two hours in town: one temple and one meal, not the Panda Base plus Jinli Street. If you land at the older Shuangliu (CTU) airport, Line 10 or a 35-minute taxi for around CNY 60 brings the floor down to 6 hours.

For a solo traveller on a short clock, People's Park (Renmin Gongyuan) is our first choice, a 10-minute walk west of Tianfu Square. At Heming Teahouse, a glass of jasmine or bamboo-leaf tea costs roughly CNY 20 to 35, and an attendant tops it up from a long-spouted copper kettle for as long as you stay; plenty of the retirees sit alone with a newspaper, so a single table draws no looks. Mahjong tiles clack under the trees, and the ear cleaners' steel tuning forks ping as they pass, charging about CNY 30 to 50 and asking before they start. The Kuanzhai Xiangzi lanes are 15 minutes away on foot, their grey-brick courtyards smelling of rabbit-head stalls and Sichuan pepper oil.

For history instead, Wenshu Monastery is two stops north of Tianfu Square on Line 1, a working Buddhist temple with incense in the courtyards and a busy teahouse of its own, and its vegetarian canteen is an easy place to eat alone. Whichever you pick, have a bowl of noodles or a plate of dumplings near the station, then be back on the metro with at least four hours left before your flight. That margin covers the ride, check-in and exit immigration without a sprint.

China's 240-hour visa-free transit is open to citizens of 55 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most of the EU, as long as you're flying on to a third country rather than looping back to where you started. Both Tianfu and Shuangliu are eligible ports. Carry your onward ticket, tell your airline at check-in, and use the transit lane when you arrive. The rules do change, so confirm with your airline before you fly.

Stops that fit a layover

  • People's Park and Heming Teahouse

70 min from the airport · A 10-minute walk from Tianfu Square metro, open from early morning, and tea by the glass means you can stay an hour or walk out after fifteen minutes without fuss.

  • Temple of Marquis Wu (Wuhou Shrine)

75 min from the airport · Compact shaded courtyards you can cover in 60 to 75 minutes, about a 15-minute taxi southwest of Tianfu Square, so the whole stop fits a two-hour window with time left for a meal.

  • Kuanzhai Xiangzi (Wide and Narrow Alleys)

75 min from the airport · Free to enter and walkable from People's Park, with street snacks you can eat as you walk, so you can leave the moment your return clock says go.

  • Du Fu Thatched Cottage

80 min from the airport · Quiet bamboo gardens about a 20-minute taxi west of Tianfu Square. Allow 90 minutes for them when you've skipped the other stops.

  • Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

85 min from the airport · Overnight layovers only. It sits in the far north of the city, away from TFU, and the pandas feed from the 7:30 opening but are mostly asleep by late morning.
