How do I get from the airport to Innsbruck?

Innsbruck Airport (INN) is one of the smallest international airports you'll use in the Alps. The terminal has one baggage carousel. One. You walk out the sliding doors into sharp mountain air, the Nordkette ridge filling the entire northern sky, and the bus stop sits 30 meters to your right. Bus Line F, operated by IVB, runs to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof every 15 minutes from around 5:30am to 11:30pm. A single ticket costs €2.40 ($2.70) from the driver or the ticket machine at the stop. The ride takes 15-18 minutes along Fürstenweg, through the residential neighborhood of Hötting, before the bus drops you at the main station. From Hauptbahnhof, the Altstadt is a flat 10-minute walk east along Museum-Straße, or one tram stop on Line 3.

A taxi rank sits outside the INN arrivals door. The metered fare to Altstadt hotels runs €10-15 ($11-17), and the ride takes 8-10 minutes unless you arrive during the 7:30-8:30am commute on Innrain. After 11:30pm, when Line F stops running, taxis are your only real option. There's no Uber in Innsbruck. Innsbruck Taxi (+43 512 5311), the city's largest dispatch, quotes the same metered rate from the rank or by phone. Mind you, if your hotel is in the Altstadt, some of the narrow lanes around Herzog-Friedrich-Straße are pedestrian-only. The driver will know the nearest drop-off on Burggraben or Maria-Theresien-Straße. That said, don't pre-book a private airport transfer for €40-60 when a metered taxi covers the same 4 km for a third of the price.

Innsbruck's geography makes this one of the simplest airport arrivals in the Austrian Alps. The Altstadt sits on the valley floor of the Inn River at 574 meters above sea level. You might feel that altitude as a slight dryness in your throat, nothing like landing in Cusco at 3,400 meters. In late June, expect 22°C air with a cooler undertone drifting off the glaciers south of Patscherkofel. The Hauptbahnhof concourse smells like fresh Semmel rolls and espresso from the bakeries on the ground floor. From the station, walk east past the Triumphpforte, an arch built in 1765 for a Habsburg wedding that turned into a state funeral mid-celebration. The Golden Roof on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße is 800 meters from the station doors. Innsbruck's walkable core covers about 1 square kilometer, so skip the rental car.
