How do I get to Milan?

Three airports serve Milan, and which one you land at shapes your first hour in the city. Malpensa (MXP), 49 km northwest of Piazza del Duomo, handles nearly all transatlantic traffic. The Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale runs every 30 minutes, takes 52 minutes, and costs €13. There's a faster Malpensa Express to Cadorna in 36 minutes. But Cadorna sits on the west side, and most hotels cluster near Centrale or the Duomo. You'd still need a metro hop or a €10-15 taxi. Linate (LIN), only 7 km east, covers short-haul European connections on ITA Airways, Air France, KLM, and Lufthansa. The M4 metro now runs directly from the terminal to San Babila in about 12 minutes for €2.20, a flat-fare biglietto ordinario that covers all ATM buses, trams, and metro for 90 minutes. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY), 45 km northeast, is Ryanair's northern Italy base. The terminal smells like espresso and warm cornetti from the Autogrill by arrivals. Worth noting, BGY markets itself as "Milan Bergamo" but it's not actually in Milan. The Terravision bus to Milano Centrale takes about 60 minutes and costs €7.

From the US East Coast, nonstop flights to Malpensa currently run 8.5 to 9.5 hours. Delta operates JFK-MXP year-round. ITA Airways, which replaced Alitalia in October 2021, connects from JFK and Miami. United runs a seasonal Newark route. Round-trip fares from JFK tend to fall between $650 and $1,200 depending on season. From London, the flight is under 2 hours. BA flies Heathrow to Linate, while easyJet and Ryanair connect Gatwick and Stansted to Malpensa or Bergamo. Mind you, those budget fares to BGY look tempting until you factor in the €7 bus and the extra hour to reach central Milan. From Australia, there's no nonstop option. The fastest routing tends to go through Dubai or Doha on Emirates or Qatar Airways, with total travel time of 20-22 hours. Round-trips from Sydney currently sit around A$1,400-2,200.

Rail is a real alternative if you're already on the continent. Trenitalia's Frecciarossa runs from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale in 2 hours 55 minutes, with advance fares from €19.90 if you book 3-4 weeks ahead. Walk-up tickets sit closer to €50-80. From Paris, both Trenitalia's Frecciarossa and SNCF's TGV make the trip in about 7 hours for €29-90 one-way. Milano Centrale itself is worth a look when you arrive. The building opened in 1931, and its marble halls have that monumental Fascist-era weight that makes Penn Station look like a bus shelter. You'll hear the clatter of departure boards and the low rumble of trains pulling in, catch that particular Italian station smell of diesel fumes and warm pastry from the platform bars. Flights to Milan tend to be cheapest between November and mid-March, excluding the December 20-January 6 holiday window when fares typically rise 40-60%. April and October have the best balance of fair pricing and mild weather, with highs around 15-20°C.
