Milan's cafe map is not a single thing. It stretches from the Duomo perimeter, where a Starbucks Reserve occupies a former post office on Piazza Cordusio, to the towers around Piazza Gae Aulenti, out to the residential grid of Corso Lodi and the industrial-fringe streets near Via Dolomiti. What ties the twelve places below together is not a house style — a Porta Genova pastry counter and a Palestrina-street neighbourhood bar share almost nothing — but a working definition of a cafe: a room you can sit in at 08:00 for coffee and again at 20:00 for something else. The list is deliberately mixed: two specialty roasters, a couple of pastry benches, a puccia counter, a poke bar with a coffee licence, a bistro that keeps morning hours, and a handful of neighbourhood bars that anchor a street. Skip the Galleria terraces charging tourist prices for the same espresso; every address below is a place a Milanese would walk to on purpose, and most are open before the shops on the same block have raised their shutters.
