Can I leave the airport on a layover in Mykonos?

JMK is a single-runway airport with one small terminal. That works in your favor. Non-Schengen passport control runs 10-20 minutes during summer peak, sometimes less in shoulder months. Schengen-zone holders skip it entirely. The taxi rank sits outside the terminal doors, and the ride to Chora's Fabrika bus station takes roughly 10 minutes for 10-12 EUR on the meter. KTEL buses cover the same route for around 2 EUR. They depart every 30 minutes from late May through September. On the return, budget 60-90 minutes before boarding for the security line and gate walk. JMK's departure hall gets hot and loud during afternoon flight clusters, with limited seating. The 5-hour floor survives the arithmetic. Count 20 minutes for immigration, 10 minutes transit each way, and a 90-minute return buffer. That leaves about 2.5 usable hours in town. Under 5 hours, stay airside at the small cafe past security, where a freddo cappuccino runs about 4 EUR and the air conditioning works.

Chora rewards walking, and you don't need a companion for it. The lanes between whitewashed walls run about a meter wide in places, with bougainvillea spilling overhead and the faint salt smell of the harbor on the meltemi wind. Head for Paraportiani first, the church built in layers starting around 1475. It sits at the waterfront edge of the Kastro district and takes about 15 minutes to appreciate. From there, Little Venice is a 3-minute walk south along the water, where wooden balconies hang directly over the sea and spray can hit your ankles if you sit at the lower tables. A solo lunch here runs 15-25 EUR for grilled sardines and a horiatiki salad, roughly 17-29 USD at current rates. Mind you, peak-season prices in July and August push that 30% higher at the water-facing spots. The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos opened in 1902 and sits a 5-minute walk from the old port. Give it about 30 minutes. Entry is around 4 EUR.

Chora after dark stays well-lit along the main lanes, with other travelers around until 3 or 4 AM in peak season. The backstreets between Matogianni and the port get quieter, but I'd walk them alone without concern. That said, beach clubs south of town, like Paradise Beach, are group-oriented spaces where singles pay full sunbed fees of 20-40 EUR without the social payoff. Skip them on a layover. LGBTQ+ friendliness sits at 8.5/10 (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric), and the island has been openly welcoming to gay travelers since the 1960s. If you're a solo female traveler, the realistic annoyance is aggressive bar promoters along Matogianni Street after midnight. Walk past them.

The one trip you cannot fit into a layover is Delos. The ferry from the old port takes 30-40 minutes each way, the archaeological site needs a minimum of 2 hours, and the last return boat leaves around 15:00 or 17:00 depending on the month. With layover math, you'd need 8 or more hours, and one missed ferry means a missed flight. The island holds ruins from as early as 200 BC, including the Delos Synagogue, and the Archaeological Museum of Delos has been open since 1904. Save it for a proper visit. If you finish Chora early, Agios Stefanos sits between the airport and town, about 5 minutes from JMK by taxi. The water there stays calm most days, and the coarse sand shakes off your feet easily. The Aegean Maritime Museum opened in 1983 in a restored 19th-century Mykonian house and fills a spare 20 minutes with navigation instruments and ship models.
