How do I get from the airport to Mykonos?

Mykonos Airport (JMK) is a single-runway strip about 4 km southeast of Mykonos Town. You walk off the plane onto the tarmac, and the Aegean wind hits you before you reach the terminal doors. The building is small, one level, and in July and August it fills to standing room within minutes of a landing. Baggage claim has two carousels. The whole process from touchdown to the exit doors takes 15-20 minutes on a good day, closer to 40 when three flights land within the same hour. Step outside and you'll find a taxi rank on the left, the bus stop about 50 meters to the right, and a row of car rental desks along the road. The heat off the pavement in summer can reach 35°C by early afternoon, so don't linger at the curb debating options.

The KTEL bus is the right answer for most arrivals. It runs from JMK to Fabrika station in Mykonos Town, about 10 minutes, for €2 (roughly $2.30 at current rates). Departures are timed to flight arrivals during the May-to-October season, though "timed" is generous. You might wait 15-20 minutes. The bus is air-conditioned, which matters after standing in full sun with luggage. Fabrika station sits at the southern edge of town, a 5-minute walk from the old port and about 10 minutes on foot from the shopping strip along Matoyianni Street in Chora. If your hotel is in Ornos, Platis Gialos, or anywhere on the south coast, you'll still need onward transport from Fabrika. But for Chora itself, the bus gets you there for the price of a water bottle.

Taxis are the pain point. Mykonos has roughly 31 licensed taxis for the entire island, and that number has not changed in years despite tourist arrivals exceeding 1.5 million annually. At peak times in July and August, when charter flights stack between 2pm and 6pm, the queue at JMK stretches along the concrete curb for 30-45 minutes in full sun. You'll hear the rattle of wheeled luggage and smell diesel from idling engines. The fixed fare from the airport to Mykonos Town runs €10-15 during the day, €15-20 after midnight. There is no Uber on the island. No Bolt either. A few transfer apps operate, but availability during peak hours tends to be unreliable. If you're traveling with heavy luggage or arriving late, pre-book a private transfer through your hotel at least 48 hours ahead. Expect to pay €25-40 for the same 4 km ride.

Rental cars are available at JMK from Sixt, Europcar, and several local agencies. The roads on Mykonos are narrow, winding, and shared with ATVs driven by tourists who picked one up 20 minutes earlier. Parking in Chora is close to nonexistent from June through September. If you plan to stay in town and take day trips to beaches, skip the car on day one and use the KTEL network instead. If your accommodation is remote (Elia Beach, Kalafatis, Fokos on the north side), a rental makes sense, but book well ahead in high season. Rates run €40-80 per day for a basic car in July, roughly double the shoulder-season price. Mind you, the airport road is one of the better-maintained strips on the island, with actual lane markings. Most inland roads lack them entirely.
