What are the best day trips from Mykonos?

Delos tops the list. The UNESCO-protected island sits 7 km southwest of Mykonos, reachable in 30 minutes by boat from the Old Port. Tinos, 30 minutes north by ferry, pairs a major Greek Orthodox pilgrimage church with quiet marble-village walks. Naxos and Paros each run under an hour by high-speed catamaran and offer beaches the history-minded partner can skip while the other swims.

Delos is the day trip from Mykonos. No debate. The island sits 7 km to the southwest, and ferries from the Old Port run between 9am and noon in summer, with the last return boat typically at 3pm. Round-trip tickets cost about €22 (roughly $25). The Archaeological Museum, open since 1904, holds finds from excavations that have been running for over a century. The Delos Synagogue dates to around 200 BC, one of the oldest known synagogues anywhere. The Greek Theatre, the Stoibadeion sanctuary of Dionysus, and the Agora of the Competaliasts are all within a 20-minute walk of the dock. For couples, here's the honest split. The ruins need 3-4 hours of walking on exposed, unshaded ground in 30°C heat. There's no shade to speak of, and the only water for sale is at the small cafe near the dock. The partner who stays behind is better off at a beach bar on Ornos, 3 km south of the Old Port, with a pickup plan for the 3pm return.

Tinos is 15 km northwest and the ferry from Mykonos takes 30 minutes. SeaJets and Hellenic Seaways both run morning departures, with round-trips around €15-20. The island feels like what Mykonos might have been 40 years ago, before the clubs and the cruise ships. Our Lady of Tinos, the Panagia Evangelistria, is Greece's most important Marian pilgrimage site. The approach up Megalocharis Street from the port is steep, about 600 meters uphill. Worth noting, the church itself is free to enter. Beyond the pilgrimage, Tinos has over 40 marble-built villages in its interior, and the village of Pyrgos, about 25 km north of the port, has a marble-carving museum and two or three tavernas where a full lunch runs €12-15 per person. For couples with split interests, one can spend the morning at the church and the marble museum while the other takes a taxi (€15-20 one way) to Kolymbithra beach on the north coast. Dinner together back in Mykonos Town by 8pm is easy with the evening ferry.

Naxos runs about 40 km south and the high-speed catamaran covers it in 35-45 minutes. The Portara, the massive marble gateway to a never-finished Temple of Apollo from the 6th century BC, stands on the Palatia islet connected to the port by a causeway. It takes 10 minutes to walk there from the ferry. The old Kastro quarter above the port has a 13th-century Venetian castle and narrow lanes where the stone underfoot is worn smooth and warm by mid-morning. For couples where one wants a beach day, Agios Prokopios, 5 km south of Naxos Town, has fine sand and water shallow enough to wade 50 meters out. Paros, a similar distance by ferry, centers on Parikia and the 4th-century Church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani. Naoussa, 12 km northeast of Parikia, has a fishing harbor that still smells like brine and diesel in the morning, with waterfront restaurants where grilled octopus runs €14-16. Both islands work as "day alone, evening together" trips if you catch a return ferry by 6pm.

The honest logistics warning. Mykonos ferries are wind-dependent. The meltemi, the strong northerly wind that blows from late June through August, can cancel or delay Delos boats with little notice. Check the morning-of schedule at the port, not the night before. If Delos is cancelled, pivot to Tinos, which runs larger vessels less affected by the chop. Ferry bookings through Blue Star Ferries or SeaJets typically open 2-3 months ahead in peak season, and the most popular morning Delos departures sell out by late June. Book online rather than queuing at the Old Port kiosk in 30°C heat. One more thing. Syros, the administrative capital of the Cyclades, is about 28 km away and 30 minutes by fast ferry. Ermoupoli has neoclassical mansions and the Apollon Theatre, modeled after La Scala in Milan. It draws fewer visitors than Tinos or Naxos, and a full lunch for two at a waterfront taverna in Ermoupoli tends to run under €30, which might cover a single cocktail back on Mykonos.
