When's the best time to visit Medellin in 2026?

Rain decides when to come to Medellín, because the temperature barely changes from month to month. The Aburrá Valley has two drier stretches, December to March and June to August. In late January the sky over El Poblado tends to be a hard, washed blue by 8am, and on the Line K Metrocable up to Santo Domingo Savio, the air smells of wood smoke and frying arepas, not wet concrete. Christmas visitors from Bogotá and Cali have mostly gone home after the Reyes holiday Monday in the second week of January, and rooms around Parque Lleras and Calle 10 usually drop back toward normal rates after that. Parque Arví, at the top of the Line L cable car, is at its best in February. The eucalyptus trails are dry underfoot, and the air up there is cool enough that you'll want a light jacket by 4pm.

Most Paisas would tell you December is the best month, and we'd say first-timers should think twice. The Alumbrados, the city's Christmas lights, have run along the Medellín River from early December into January in recent years. The night air near Parques del Río smells of buñuelos and natilla, and the lights are worth an evening. Colombian families travel all over the country in the second half of December, meaning rooms in El Poblado tend to cost the most of the year and the Metro can be packed shoulder to shoulder after 7pm. August has the same problem in a shorter burst. The Feria de las Flores runs from late July into the second week of August, and its Desfile de Silleteros brings farmers down from Santa Elena carrying flower frames on their backs. If you want the parade, book your room about three months out. If you don't, come in July. The dry season has started by then and Laureles is quieter.

The four storm months named above won't wreck a trip, but they change how you plan each day. Clouds tend to build over the eastern ridge by 1pm, and storms break between about 2pm and 5pm. On the tin roofs of Comuna 13, the rain gets loud enough that guides stop talking until it passes. Mornings are usually dry, so we'd put the Comuna 13 escalator walk, or the Museo de Antioquia and the Botero sculptures in Plaza Botero, before lunch and leave the storm hours for the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín in Ciudad del Río. The day trip to Guatapé suffers most: the roughly 700 steps of El Peñol get slick, and cloud often hides the reservoir by noon. Semana Santa falls in late March or April and brings its own complications, with shuttered shops and full buses out of the Terminal del Norte. At noon on 19 October 2026 the city read 28°C and 52% humidity under overcast skies, a typical October midday before the afternoon rain.
