When's the best time to visit Medellin in 2026?

Medellín sits at 1,495 metres in the Aburrá Valley, and that elevation pins temperatures between 17°C and 28°C year-round. Unlike Bogotá at 2,640m, there's no real cold season to dodge. What matters are two dry windows, December through February and late June through July, separated by two rainy stretches. December and January bring warm afternoons around 27°C, cool evenings that drop to 17°C, and skies clear enough to see the ridgeline from Parque de El Poblado. That 10-degree swing means a light layer after dark in Laureles or Envigado, even though daytime in Parque Lleras feels like permanent late spring.

The Feria de las Flores in early August is Medellín's single biggest event. The Desfile de Silleteros on the final Sunday fills Carrera 70 with 500+ silleta carriers. Each arrangement weighs up to 70 kg, and the scent of orchids and heliconias sits thick in the warm afternoon air. Hotel rates in El Poblado and Laureles climb 40–60% during the 10-day festival, and you'll need to book 2–3 months ahead. August averages about 150 mm of rain, with afternoon showers that tend to hit by 3pm but rarely last more than 45 minutes. If you want dry weather and lower prices, early July gives you both, and Laureles feels noticeably less packed than during the December holiday rush.

October and November are Medellín's wettest months, with rainfall reaching 200–250 mm. The rain tends to come in heavy afternoon downpours that flood Calle 10 and turn some of the steeper streets in Comuna 13 slippery. You can still visit, and hotel rates drop 20–30% compared to December. But if you have 3 days for a first trip, you'll lose meaningful time waiting out storms at Café Velvet in El Poblado or under the awning at Mercado del Río. The grey skies flatten the views from Pueblito Paisa, which on a clear January morning shows the valley floor all the way to Bello, 12 km north.

For a first visit, target the last two weeks of January. Medellín's own vacation crowds thin out after January 6, Día de Reyes, and airfares from Bogotá on Avianca drop to around 150,000–200,000 COP one-way. The Alumbrados Navideños Christmas lights along the Río Medellín still glow through mid-January in some barrios. Mornings at Jardín Botánico sit around 22°C, with the smell of wet earth from overnight dew and coffee from the vendors near the entrance on Calle 73. The Museum of Antioquia, open since 1881, is a 15-minute Metro ride south to Parque Berrío, and the Botero sculptures in Plaza Botero draw smaller weekday crowds before 10am.
