What's happening in Dubai this week?

Dubai moved to a Saturday-Sunday weekend in 2022, but Friday still keeps part of the old rhythm: government offices close around noon, mosques across Deira and Bur Dubai fill for the 1:15pm Jumu'ah prayer, and many stalls in the Gold Souk and Spice Souk close from roughly 11:30am to 2pm. Go on Thursday evening instead, when the smell of saffron and dried black lime hangs heavy in the Deira lanes and traders have time to haggle. Saturday is brunch day, with hotels from Downtown to Dubai Marina selling three-hour packages, usually AED 300 to 700 (about $82 to $190), and by 4pm Sheikh Zayed Road fills with taxis carrying full, sleepy diners. Sunday is the quietest morning of the week, partly because the Dubai Metro doesn't open until 8am that day, against 5am on weekdays. Monday to Wednesday are the sightseeing days.

Heat sets Dubai's daily clock. For most of the year daytime highs reach 33°C or more, and the Gulf off Jumeirah Beach feels as warm as bathwater, but after sunset the humidity eases and the terraces in Downtown and Dubai Marina fill. Global Village, out by Dubailand, runs a winter season and tends to stay open past midnight from Thursday to Saturday while it operates, so go after 8pm, when the pavilion stalls are grilling lamb and the asphalt has cooled. If you're jet-lagged, use the 6am wake-up rather than fight it: the Dubai Frame opens at 9am, and its glass-floored bridge 150 metres up is cool and nearly empty for the first hour. Skip anything outdoors between noon and 4pm on hot days, because at 2pm the sand at Kite Beach can be too hot for bare feet and the walk from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station leaves most people damp.

Evenings run to a fixed clock. The Dubai Fountain on Burj Lake plays every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm, and the free view from the Souk Al Bahar footbridge beats any paid boat. We'd book a 6:30pm slot at the Burj Khalifa's 124th-floor deck, watch the light fade over the Gulf, then come down for the 7:30pm show. Dubai Creek is the cheaper night out: a wooden abra from Dubai Old Souk station across to Deira costs AED 1 and takes about five minutes, with diesel fumes, slapping water, and the call to prayer echoing off both banks. The Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort was still closed for renovation at last report, but the lanes of the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood next door, with their wind towers, make a fair substitute. From Thursday to Saturday night, the beach clubs on Palm Jumeirah and at JBR book headline DJs, most requiring a reservation and a dress code, with entry that tends to start around AED 200 before your first drink.
