What's happening in Dubai this week?

The UAE switched to a Saturday-Sunday weekend in 2022, with Friday as a half-day. This shapes the whole week. Friday afternoon is when the city loosens up after the work week's last short shift, and Friday night is the big going-out night, when restaurants in DIFC and rooftop bars at Dubai Marina stay full past 1am. Saturday and Sunday are family days. Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates reach peak crowds by Saturday early afternoon. Monday through Thursday feel noticeably calmer. Queues at the Burj Khalifa observation deck (tickets from 169 AED) are shorter on those days. The Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi, operating since 1971, has breathing room on weekday mornings. At the moment, summer humidity is the kind that fogs your phone camera lens the instant you step outside an air-conditioned building. Plan outdoor time before 8am or after 8pm. Between those windows, the city lives indoors.

Friday brunch is Dubai's signature weekly institution. Hotels across the city set afternoon spreads starting around 1pm and running until 4 or 5pm. Prices range from roughly 300 AED (about 82 USD) at mid-range venues to 600 AED at places like Saffron at Atlantis The Palm or Bubbalicious at The Westin Mina Seyahi. Most packages include drinks. The food runs from sushi stations to lamb carving boards and dessert bars, all served in dining rooms held at 22°C while the glass separates you from the heat outside. Book by Wednesday for popular spots. After brunch, the Dubai Fountain runs free shows every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm at the base of the Burj Khalifa. The 150-metre water jets shift colour with each musical set. The best viewing angle is from the lower ground floor exit of Dubai Mall, about a 10-minute walk through the building.

Summer Dubai runs on air conditioning and late evenings. Ski Dubai inside Mall of the Emirates keeps a steady -4°C with real snow and a chairlift. Wild Wadi Water Park, next to Jumeirah Beach Hotel, costs around 299 AED for adults and runs daily through the summer months. The Dubai Aquarium at Dubai Mall holds 33,000 marine animals in a 10-million-litre tank, visible free from the walkway. The tunnel walk-through costs about 135 AED. The Museum of the Future on Sheikh Zayed Road, opened in 2022, is worth the 149 AED entry for the building alone. That said, evenings outdoors are better than you'd expect. JBR Beach becomes tolerable after 7pm. The sand cools enough to walk on barefoot, and restaurant terraces along The Walk fill with the smell of grilled meat and shisha smoke. Deira's Spice Souk, about 200 metres east of the Gold Souk, carries the heavy scent of saffron and dried rose petals even at 9pm.

The Dubai Metro Red Line connects the airport (Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 stations) to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station and onward to Dubai Marina. A Nol Silver card costs 25 AED for the card plus roughly 4 AED per single-zone trip. Mind you, the metro doesn't open until 10am on Fridays. The carriages are cold enough that a light layer helps. Taxis start at 12 AED and the RTA app gives government-regulated pricing, working like a ride-hail. With the dirham pegged at 3.67 to the dollar, a mid-range dinner for two in Dubai Marina runs 200-400 AED (55-109 USD). Street food is harder to find here than in most Middle Eastern cities. The food courts inside malls are the closest equivalent, with shawarma plates at 25-35 AED and karak chai for 5 AED from the small counters near the Gold Souk.
