When's the best time to visit San Diego in 2026?

September and October are when San Diego stops performing and relaxes. The marine layer that smothers the coast through May and June has lifted. Afternoons in La Jolla reach 78°F with humidity around 40%. The Pacific hits its warmest, around 68-70°F off Mission Beach, warm enough that you can stay in the water past your ankles without that sharp cold-shock gasp. Hotel rates in the Gaslamp Quarter drop 20-30% after Labor Day, and you won't queue 45 minutes for a table at The Fish Market on the harbor. The air along Harbor Drive smells like salt and warm concrete. Evenings cool to the low 60s, right for a beer on the North Park patios without needing a jacket.

First-time visitors book July and August assuming California means guaranteed sun. Mostly true, but those 2 months carry the highest hotel rates in San Diego County, and beaches from Pacific Beach to Coronado fill shoulder-to-shoulder by 11am on weekends. The bigger surprise is June. San Diegans call it June Gloom. A thick marine layer rolls in off the Pacific overnight and sits on the coast until 1 or 2pm, sometimes all day. The sky over Coronado looks like wet cement. You hear fog horns from Point Loma, and the sand at Ocean Beach feels damp and cool underfoot even at noon. It burns off faster inland, so Balboa Park, founded in 1868 and home to 17 museums, tends to clear by mid-morning while the coastline stays gray.

March and April are the other strong window. Temperatures sit around 66-70°F, rain tapers off by mid-March, and Cabrillo National Monument on the tip of Point Loma is at its best for gray whale watching through late March. The monument was established in 1913, and the Bayside Trail below it blooms with purple and yellow coastal sage in spring. Hotel rates at beachfront properties in Mission Bay tend to bottom out in March, $150-200 a night for rooms that cost $300 or more in August. You might catch a Padres opening series at Petco Park, where upper-deck seats run about $25 and the smell of garlic fries carries three sections over. The ocean is still cold in spring, around 60-62°F, so plan on that if you want to surf or snorkel La Jolla Cove.
