How do I get to San Diego?

The airport sits on Harbor Drive, close enough to the Gaslamp Quarter that you can watch 737s descend over the Bankers Hill rooftops on final approach. Terminal 1 completed a major rebuild in 2024. The new concourse has 30 gates and floor-to-ceiling harbor views. Terminal 2 West handles most Southwest flights. From the East Coast, nonstop options run 5 to 5.5 hours on Delta, United, American, JetBlue, and Alaska, with round trips between $200 and $450. From the Midwest, Southwest and Frontier offer $150-300 fares from Chicago Midway and Denver. British Airways runs seasonal nonstop service from London Heathrow, May through October, at £500-900 round trip. Most year-round European travelers connect through LAX, Dallas-Fort Worth, or Chicago O'Hare. Low season for fares falls in January through March. Presidents' Day weekend is the exception.

The Cross Border Xpress is the detail most first-timers miss. This enclosed pedestrian skywalk in Otay Mesa connects directly to Tijuana's General Abelardo L. Rodriguez International Airport (TIJ), 27 km southeast of downtown San Diego. Volaris and VivaAerobus fly to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and 30+ Mexican cities at fares 40-60% below what you'd pay routing through a US hub. The CBX crossing fee runs $16 one way. You'll need a valid passport, and the walk takes about 10 minutes through US and Mexican customs. This works both ways. If you're flying in from Latin America, landing at TIJ and walking into California can save $200-400 over a direct US booking. Ride-share from CBX to downtown San Diego takes 25 minutes and costs $20-30.

The drive from Los Angeles on I-5 takes about 2 hours without traffic, but Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings between Oceanside and San Clemente stretch that to 3.5 hours. SAN's compact size means you're at the curb within 10 minutes of leaving the gate. The warm pavement and eucalyptus hit you immediately, even at midnight. MTS Route 992 connects both terminals to the Old Town Transit Center in 15 minutes for $2.50. From Old Town, pick up the trolley Green Line for the Gaslamp Quarter or Blue Line toward the Mexican border. Taxis to downtown hotels run $12-18 before tip. If you land after 10 PM, the 992 stops running and ride-share peak pricing kicks in. Budget $25-35 for a late-night Uber to the Gaslamp. SAN still has no rail link to the terminals despite decades of proposals. The planned People Mover would connect to the trolley network, but it remains in environmental review as of 2026.
