Where should I stay in San Diego?

Little Italy between Grape Street and Ash Street is the neighborhood to book for a first trip to San Diego. The Saturday Mercato farmers market on West Date Street draws around 10,000 visitors between 8am and 2pm, which tells you something about the food culture packed into a few blocks. India Street runs north-south through the middle, and you'll find 3 or 4 serious restaurants per block. Extraordinary Desserts on 5th Avenue stays open until 11pm most nights. The trolley's Little Italy station connects to Old Town Transit Center in 8 minutes, your transfer point for the airport. Hotel rates along West Ash and West Beech streets tend to sit around $160-260 for a three- or four-star room. The Porto Vista Hotel on Columbia Street runs closer to $140. The neighborhood smells like fresh sourdough and espresso in the morning, grilled seafood by 6pm. Street noise dies down by midnight, which is not something the Gaslamp Quarter to the south can promise.

The Gaslamp Quarter sits 15 blocks south along 5th Avenue and is the conventional first-timer pick. It works if you want bars and restaurants past midnight. The 16-block historic district runs from Broadway south to Harbor Drive, and the Victorian-era buildings along 4th and 5th avenues date to the 1880s and 1890s. Noise is the trade-off. On Friday and Saturday nights, 5th Avenue between E and K streets has the volume of a stadium, and hotel windows facing the avenue won't fix that. Expect $180-300 for a decent room. The Pendry on J Street is likely the best hotel in the district at around $350-450. You're a 10-minute walk from Petco Park and the convention center. If you're visiting during Comic-Con in late July, book the Gaslamp 6 months ahead or accept a 30-minute commute from Mission Valley.

La Jolla sits 19 km north along the I-5. The coastline makes the drive worthwhile. La Jolla Cove smells like salt and sea lions (the colony is right there on the rocks), and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has the best coastal trail in the county at about 2.5 km each way. Hotels here run $250-500. The Grande Colonial on Prospect Street sits at the lower end. The Lodge at Torrey Pines tends toward $450-600. You will need a car. Coronado, across the bay bridge, is the other out-of-downtown option. The Hotel del Coronado, open since 1888, charges $400-700 and faces Coronado Beach directly. The island feels slower, the sand warmer underfoot than you'd expect even in mid-August. It's a strong pick for families. Dinner options on Coronado thin out after 9pm though, and getting back downtown means a $15-20 rideshare.

Mission Beach and Pacific Beach pull first-timers with the word 'beach' in the name. Both are fine for a day trip, not for a base. Parking runs $15-25 per day in summer, lots fill by 10am on weekends, and the bar scene on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach skews college-loud past 10pm. You're also 20 minutes from Balboa Park, founded in 1868, and 25 from downtown by bus. Routes 8 and 27 run every 20-30 minutes after 8pm. Old Town is near the main transit hub but the restaurants largely serve the same reheated combo plate. San Diego's mid-August evenings currently hover around 21°C with 83% humidity. It feels warmer than the number suggests near the coast. If you're arriving from somewhere cooler, book a room with working air conditioning, not a 'coastal breeze' promise. Little Italy, a proper hotel, a trolley stop that works. That's the answer.
