It is a working city's coffee map: sandwich counters that open before the offices, Italian bakeries near the airport approach, roasters wedged into Hillcrest's medical corridor, and a handful of late-night rooms that still exist because someone insisted they should. What follows is twelve places worth ordering at, arranged by how often we send visitors to them. Most cluster in Bankers Hill, Hillcrest, University Heights, and North Park (the ZIP-code band roughly from 92101 up through 92104) because that is where the walkable morning happens. A few sit further out for a reason: an India Street sandwich you plan a drive around, a Beech Street kitchen that keeps serving into the night. Skip the harbor-facing chains built for the cruise crowd; the caffeine that keeps this city moving is inland, a few blocks off the freeway, in rooms that opened for regulars and never quite stopped behaving that way.
