Temperature matters on the Las Vegas Strip more than first-timers expect: Bellagio to Caesars Palace looks like five minutes on the map, but it takes closer to 25 once you count the pedestrian bridges, escalators, and casino floors you have to cross, and in April that walk is comfortable at 2pm. April's downside is wind. Gusts of 30 to 40 mph can blow grit down Las Vegas Boulevard, and some resorts close their pool decks for the afternoon when it hits. Most Strip pools reopen by mid-March, and seasonal day clubs such as Wet Republic at MGM Grand usually open on spring weekends and stay open into early fall.

June through August is the season to skip. July's average high is near 105°F (41°C), and at midnight it is often still around 80°F (27°C). Stepping out of Caesars Palace in July feels like a hair dryer pointed at your face, and after a few minutes the metal handrails on the Tropicana Avenue footbridges can be hot enough to sting your palm. Summer rooms are the cheapest of the year and often fall under $60 on weeknights before resort fees, though that advantage disappears the moment you step outside. If you want to hike at Red Rock Canyon, go at sunrise and carry a gallon of water per person. Monsoon storms tend to arrive in late July and August, rolling in quickly, flooding the desert washes along Interstate 15, and leaving the air smelling of wet creosote bush for about an hour.

Weather rarely ruins a Las Vegas trip, but the convention calendar can. CES in early January brings more than 130,000 attendees and can push a $120 Tuesday room at the Flamingo past $400. In past years the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix in November has closed stretches of the Strip and Koval Lane during race week, with barriers going up along the sidewalks near Bellagio and the walk between casinos stretching to twice its usual length. In early December the National Finals Rodeo fills the south Strip with Stetsons and boot-heel clatter for ten nights at the Thomas & Mack Center. Check the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority calendar before you pay for anything, then plan to arrive between Sunday and Thursday, when the same hotel room commonly costs half its Friday or Saturday rate.

December through February is underrated for first-timers who care more about shows than pools. December highs are near 57°F (14°C), with nights dropping to about 39°F (4°C), and after 10pm the canopy over the Fremont Street Experience downtown funnels a cold wind, so pack a real jacket. Most pools are closed. Sphere, the High Roller, and the resident shows at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace run the same in any weather, and outside convention weeks room rates are at their lowest of the year.
