Where should I stay in Jackson Hole?

The Town of Jackson is the right base for a first visit. Town Square, with its 4 elk-antler arches, sits at the center of a walkable 6-block grid where you can reach dinner, groceries at Albertsons on West Broadway, and a dozen galleries without moving your car. The Wort Hotel, open since 1941, costs $350-500 per night but puts you one block from the square, and its Silver Dollar Bar has more than 2,000 silver dollars inlaid in the counter. From any hotel in town, Grand Teton National Park's Moose entrance is 15 minutes north on US-191. Yellowstone's south gate sits 57 miles farther. September afternoons still reach 21°C, but the air drops near freezing by morning, and at 14% humidity your lips will crack by day 2 if you skip the balm. You need a car for the parks, but town itself is walkable for 3 or 4 days of dinners and morning errands.

Teton Village, 12 miles northwest of Jackson at the base of Rendezvous Mountain, makes sense if you are here to ski or want to ride the aerial tram up to 10,450 feet. The tram runs late May through late September. Four Seasons Resort here goes $700-1,200 per night in peak ski season. Hotel Terra, a more moderate option, books at $250-450. The trade-off is real, though. Teton Village has maybe 5 restaurants total. After 9pm it goes quiet. You will drive into Jackson for groceries, for a decent bar, for anything beyond the resort campus. In January, overnight temperatures at 6,311 feet average minus 14°C, and the walk from your room to the gondola base feels longer when wind pushes across the open valley floor. That said, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort covers 2,500 acres with a 4,139-foot vertical drop, and a slopeside room eliminates the morning commute.

Jackson Hole is one of the most expensive resort valleys in the western United States. A standard room in town runs $150-300 from June through September, then drops to $100-180 in the shoulder months of April, May, and late October. Ski season, mid-December through early April, pushes rates to $250-500 for mid-range properties. Vacation rentals along Spring Gulch Road or on the west bank of the Snake River offer 2-bedroom places for $200-350, a better deal for groups of 3 or 4. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for July and August. Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is the only commercial airport inside a U.S. national park, with daily flights from Denver, Salt Lake City, Dallas, and Chicago in summer. That proximity means the valley's roughly 3,200 hotel and rental rooms fill faster than you might expect for a town of around 10,500 residents.

If you arrive after dark, be careful. The 2-lane roads outside town have no streetlights, and moose cross Highway 22 at dusk and dawn. For coffee, Persephone Bakery on East Broadway opens at 7am. The line reaches the sidewalk by 7:30, and the sourdough smells like a warm kitchen even from outside. Their egg sandwich runs about $14 and is better than anything at the resort restaurants. Snake River Grill, facing Town Square, serves elk tenderloin that tastes like lean beef with a faintly gamey finish, at $35-55 per entree. Worth noting, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, founded in 1987 and set into a hillside 2.5 miles north of town, holds over 5,000 works across 14 galleries. Its rammed-earth walls keep the interior cool even on a 28°C August afternoon, and the Teton views from the sculpture trail outside might be the quietest 20 minutes you spend in the valley.
