What are the best day trips from Jackson Hole?

Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park, 32 km north of Jackson Hole, is the day trip. On the drive north, pull over at the Chapel of the Transfiguration near Moose Junction, a log-frame church built in 1925 with the Tetons framed in its altar window. The Jenny Lake boat shuttle ($18 round trip per person, runs 7am to 7pm June through September) crosses in 12 minutes and drops you at the Cascade Canyon trailhead. The first 2 miles to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point suit the partner who wants a moderate walk. The other can push solo to Lake Solitude, another 5 miles and 2,600 feet of elevation, and meet back at the dock by 4pm. The trail smells like warm vanilla from lodgepole pine resin, and the South Fork creek runs loud enough to drown out conversation for the first mile. The canyon floor stays cool enough for a jacket even when Jackson Hole hits 27°C. String Lake, 3 km north, has a sandy-bottom swimming area that reaches about 18°C by mid-July.

Granite Hot Springs sits 55 km southeast of Jackson Hole via US-189/191 south past Hoback Junction, then a 16 km gravel road into the canyon. The pool is fed by a natural spring that emerges at 44°C, cooled to roughly 34°C by Granite Creek in summer. It costs $12 per adult and opens at 10am. You soak for 2 hours in mineral-heavy water and stare up at the Gros Ventre Range. It's the most restorative thing near Jackson Hole. To be fair, the pool gets crowded by noon on weekends, with 40 to 50 people in a space that feels right for 20. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Pack a picnic for the riverside pullout 3 km before the springs, where the creek smells like cold stone and the only sound is water over rock.

Yellowstone's Lower Loop works as a day trip from Jackson Hole, but be honest with each other about the commitment. Old Faithful is 130 km north, roughly 2 hours each way if bison don't block the road at Hayden Valley (they will, for 20 to 45 minutes, at least once). The sulfur smell hits at West Thumb and doesn't leave. Start by 7am to reach Old Faithful by 9am, watch the eruption (roughly every 90 minutes, predicted to the hour on the NPS app), then drive south past Grand Prismatic Spring and Yellowstone Lake. You'll be back in Jackson Hole by 7pm, tired and smelling of sulfur. That's 12 hours. If one of you wants a slower day, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, founded in 1987 and 4 km north of Jackson Hole's town square, fills a 2-hour morning at $15 admission while the other handles Yellowstone solo. The $35 park entrance fee covers 7 days, so a second visit costs nothing extra. Mind you, the Upper Loop (Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Falls, Lamar Valley) needs its own full day.

The Idaho side of the Tetons is 40 km west over Teton Pass (Highway 22, 2,570 m summit, steep switchbacks but fully paved). The observation deck puts you close enough to feel the spray on your face. Round trip from Jackson Hole through Driggs to Mesa Falls and back runs about 8 hours with stops.
