Swimming at the main beach is not dangerous, but it is unpleasant. The city seems to know this. Most of the beachfront development now faces the ocean as a backdrop, not a destination.

The jet ski damage scam is Pattaya's oldest running racket and it still works. You rent a machine for 1,500 baht per 30 minutes. When you return it, the operator finds a scratch underneath the hull. Sometimes three scratches. The quoted repair bill lands between 10,000 and 30,000 baht, and a group of men appear to help you understand why paying is easier than arguing. Tourist police on Beach Road have heard this complaint thousands of times. Their advice tends to be blunt. Don't rent one. If you insist, the south end of Jomtien has operators with slightly better reputations, but the safest approach is to photograph every surface of the machine before you touch it and record the handover on video. Even then, you might lose.

Walking Street, the 500-meter pedestrian strip between Soi 13/4 and Bali Hai Pier, has two failure modes for first-timers. Before 9pm it is a hot, empty road that smells of last night's drains being hosed down. The baht bus system confuses everyone on day one. Songthaews running the main routes follow a fixed loop at a flat fare. The moment you flag one down and name a specific destination, you have chartered it, and the price jumps to 200-400 baht. Grab works in Pattaya and a ride from North Pattaya to Jomtien runs about 100-150 baht. Use that instead. The gem shops that taxi drivers steer you toward near Sukhumvit Road operate the same way they do in Bangkok. You will hear that a factory is having a special sale today only. The stones are worth a fraction of the quoted price. Timeshare touts work the entrance to Central Festival mall and the Beach Road promenade, offering free meals and VIP tours in exchange for a 90-minute presentation. The meal is worth about 200 baht. Your 90 minutes of holiday time is worth considerably more.

Between June and October, Pattaya gets heavy afternoon rain that floods Soi Buakhao and the lower sections of Second Road within 20 minutes. The temperature currently sits around 29°C with humidity near 71%, so you will be damp from sweat even when it is not raining. Skip the tiger photo operations on Thepprasit Road. The animals are sedated or declawed, the 1,500-baht photo fee funds the cycle, and international coverage of these operations has been negative since 2016. Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden, open since 1980 about 18 km south of central Pattaya, is the better half-day alternative for a nature attraction. The Sanctuary of Truth in Naklua draws visitors for its hand-carved teak structure, and it is worth seeing, but the 500-baht entry fee is steep by Thai standards and the scaffolding has been up for decades. It may never be finished.
