How do I get to Pattaya?

Pattaya has no major international airport. U-Tapao (UTP), 35 km south of the city center, handles limited domestic routes on Bangkok Airways from Chiang Mai and Ko Samui, plus seasonal charters from China and Russia between November and February. A taxi from UTP into town costs 400-500 baht and takes about 40 minutes. Most visitors end up flying into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK), 145 km to the northwest. From London, direct flights run 11 hours on Thai Airways or BA for £500-800 round-trip. From the US west coast, expect 15-17 hours with one stop through Tokyo, Seoul, or Taipei at $900-1,400. May and June low-season fares tend to drop 30-40% below those bands. Don Mueang (DMK), 185 km north, is AirAsia and Nok Air territory for budget hops from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or Hanoi at $60-150 one-way. If you're connecting from within Southeast Asia, DMK is likely your best value.

The transfer from Suvarnabhumi is simpler than it looks. Head to Floor B1, Gate 8, where the Bell Travel Service coach departs roughly every 90 minutes between 07:00 and 22:00. A private taxi from Suvarnabhumi runs 1,500-2,000 baht and saves maybe 20 minutes, though Bangkok's outbound traffic between 16:00 and 19:00 can push the drive past 3 hours. If your flight lands after 22:00, the taxi is your only real option. Use the official counter on Level 1.

If you're already in Bangkok, the air-conditioned bus from Ekkamai (Eastern Bus Terminal) on Sukhumvit Soi 63 is the standard route. BTS Ekkamai station sits right outside. Departures run every 30-40 minutes from 05:00 to 23:00 for 108-128 baht, and the ride takes about 2.5 hours. Minivans from the same terminal cost a similar fare and run slightly faster. That said, they pack passengers tight and the driving tends toward aggressive. A slower option is the daily train from Bangkok, which currently departs at 06:55 and arrives in Pattaya around 10:35. Third-class fare is 31 baht. The carriages are open-windowed, and you'll feel warm humid air and catch the grassy smell of Chonburi's salt flats sliding past. The seats are wooden benches, and it takes 3.5 hours. But for the price of a bottled water you see countryside that most visitors never glimpse.

Sort your connectivity before you land. An eSIM activated on airport WiFi saves the 20-minute queue at the physical SIM counter. You'll want mobile data working immediately for Grab (Thailand's ride-hailing app, which works well in Pattaya) and for Google Maps on the city's confusing one-way streets. Late August temperatures currently hover around 29°C with about 71% humidity, and afternoon downpours arrive most days between 14:00 and 16:00. The thick, warm air hits you the second you step outside the terminal.
