Is Pattaya LGBTQ-friendly?

Pattaya rates 7.8/10 for LGBTQ+ friendliness, sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric, and same-sex couples check into Central Pattaya and Jomtien hotels without a raised eyebrow. The catch for couples is that Boyztown, the best-known gay strip, runs mostly on go-go bars, so the better shared evenings tend to happen in Jomtien and at the Second Road cabarets.

Tiffany's Show on Second Road in North Pattaya has been running its trans cabaret since 1974, so book the 6pm seating before the coach tours fill the 8pm one. Front-centre seats currently cost about 1,000 to 1,200 baht, which works out to roughly US$30 to $36 at 33.55 baht to the dollar. The sequins catch the stage lights and throw them back to the rear rows, and the theatre's air conditioning is cold enough that you'll want a light layer. Alcazar is a short walk down the same road and usually costs a little less, and couples rarely regret picking either one. After the show, flag a 10-baht songthaew heading south and finish the night at the Jomtien bars, where the soi smells of squid grilling on the carts along Jomtien Second Road.

For the partner who likes history, the Sanctuary of Truth in Naklua makes a good morning: the hall is built entirely of carved teak, it smells of resin and sawdust, and the sea wind rattles through the open sides. Nobody at the Naklua ticket desk will look twice at two men or two women buying tickets together. The partner who'd rather eat can spend that morning at the Lan Pho seafood market about 2 km south, where blue crab is sold by the kilo and the vendors will steam it for a small fee. Meet at Dongtan Beach around 5pm. The sand at the north end is coarse and warm, the umbrella rows there have drawn a gay crowd for years, and the sun goes down behind Ko Larn.

Most guides send you to Boyztown, and for a couple it's overrated. The business on that lane is dancers, not conversation, and the bass from the speakers shakes the plastic chairs. Have one drink there if you're curious, then leave. The same goes for the 'romantic' dinner cruises out of Bali Hai Pier, which tend to fill with stag and hen parties on Fridays and Saturdays, so a Tuesday or Wednesday sailing is quieter and usually cheaper. Plan one big outing per evening, because Pattaya's October heat wears people down. On 20 October it was 30.3°C with light drizzle and felt like 37.3°C, and that kind of humidity hangs on until the breeze comes off the Gulf of Thailand after dark.

8/10 LGBTQ-friendliness rating

Composite of legal status, social acceptance, and visible scene.

The scene

Boyztown is on Pattayaland Soi 3, a pedestrian lane between Beach Road and Second Road, and it holds go-go bars, small cabarets and gay-run guesthouses. Sunee Plaza, near Soi Buakhao, is smaller and cheaper, with a crowd that runs mostly to Thai locals and long-stay expats. Jomtien Complex sits one block behind Jomtien Beach Road, where the bars are open-air and couples can settle in over a 90-baht Chang and watch the soi go by.

Safety notes

Holding hands on Beach Road or along Jomtien draws no reaction. Walking Street after midnight is a different matter, with touts and drunk stag groups, so go before 10pm or skip it. The real risks are padded bar bills and spiked drinks in go-go venues: check every chit and keep your glass with you. In the villages inland from Sattahip, Thai couples keep affection low-key, and we'd follow their lead.
