Is Pattaya safe?

We score Pattaya 6.2/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), a notch under Bangkok, and the gap comes from the nightlife, not street crime. The strip from Central Festival south to Walking Street serves alcohol until about 3am, and by 1am the club bass on Walking Street thuds through the damp, warm air while touts wave laminated menus for ping-pong shows. Those shows run Pattaya's most reliable rip-off: a 100 baht beer turns into a 1,500 baht bill, about USD 44, with two bouncers standing at the door. Spiked drinks get reported in the go-go bars of Soi 6 and the beer bars off Soi Buakhao, so we suggest sealed bottles that stay in your hand. On the Beach Road promenade after midnight, the theft the Tourist Police see most is freelancers working in pairs, where one hugs you and the other lifts your phone.

Jet-ski hire on Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach is the scam we warn about first. Operators check nothing when you set off, but when you come back they point at 'new' scratches and demand 10,000 to 30,000 baht, roughly USD 300 to 890. Film every panel of the jet ski on your phone before you leave the Pattaya sand, or skip it. Jomtien looks calm, but rip currents pull hard there between May and October, and the red flags along Jomtien Beach Road mean it. Sukhumvit Road is the risk few guides mention: a multi-lane highway full of trucks and scooters, with few signalled crossings near the Pattaya Klang junction. Rental shops on Second Road often ask for your passport as a deposit, so leave cash instead. Without a motorcycle licence valid in Thailand, your insurer will likely refuse any crash claim.

After dark, the blue baht buses (songthaew) run south along Beach Road and north along Second Road for 10 baht, about USD 0.30, though some drivers will ask 20 baht after midnight. To ride one, press the ceiling buzzer when you want to stop and pass coins through the driver's window. Grab and Bolt both cover Pattaya and Jomtien, and if you're leaving Walking Street at 2am we'd take a tracked ride with the plate number in the app over a motorbike taxi. Solo women tell us that Wong Amat in Naklua and Pratumnak Hill feel calmer at night than Soi Buakhao, where the soi stalls smell of grilled squid rather than spilled Chang. For Koh Larn, take the 30 baht public ferry from Bali Hai Pier rather than a speedboat tout's offer, and check the last return sailing at the pier office.

If you're on a long stay and want company, a small-group day trip to Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden or to the teak carvings of the Sanctuary of Truth in Naklua puts you with a handful of other travellers, not a coach of forty. There is a Tourist Police booth near the Walking Street entrance on Beach Road, and the officers on its 1155 hotline speak English; the general police number is 191 and ambulance is 1669. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road is the private hospital most expats use, and it bills foreign travel insurers directly.
