How do I get around Udaipur?

Auto-rickshaws are how Udaipur moves. The green-and-yellow three-wheelers idle at every intersection around Jagdish Chowk, Hathi Pol, and the City Palace gate. Metered fares start at around 25 INR (roughly $0.25), but meters are largely decorative. Negotiate before you sit down. A ride from the old city to Fateh Sagar Lake runs 80-100 INR. From the bus stand at Udai Pol to City Palace, expect 50-60 INR. Shared autos follow fixed routes for 10-15 INR per seat, but you'll need to know the route name in Hindi. They're worth the confusion for the Surajpol-to-Delhi Gate stretch if you want to see the city as residents do. The exhaust fumes hang in the humid air, and the two-stroke engine rattle becomes constant background noise within an hour.

Ola works in Udaipur. Uber does not, or barely does. Download Ola before you land at Maharana Pratap Airport (also called Dabok, 22 km east of the old city). Wait times tend to be 5-10 minutes outside peak hours, and the fare from the airport to Lal Ghat runs 400-500 INR. That is less than half what the prepaid taxi counter quotes. On foot, the stretch from Jagdish Temple to Bagore-ki-Haveli along the lake is about 800 meters, passing miniature-painting studios, spice vendors, and chai stalls selling cups for 10 INR. Mind you, the lanes narrow to shoulder-width in places, and during monsoon (currently, with humidity near 89%), the stone steps get slick with rain. Wear shoes with grip. Flip-flops on wet marble near Gangaur Ghat are a hospital trip waiting to happen.

Lake Pichola boat rides are transport, not a sightseeing extra you can skip. The municipal boats from Rameshwar Ghat to Jag Mandir (the island palace started in 1560) run 400-800 INR per person depending on boat type. Sunset slots sell out by early afternoon. The Lake Palace, now operated as a Taj hotel on Jag Niwas island, is closed to non-guests. For Monsoon Palace at Sajjangarh, 5 km uphill on a winding road with no sidewalk, hire a car or auto-rickshaw. Entry for foreign visitors currently runs around 300 INR plus a separate vehicle fee. Worth noting, full-day private taxis through your hotel cost 1,500-2,500 INR, which covers Sajjangarh, the Ahar Cenotaphs 3 km east, and a loop back through Fateh Sagar. That works out to roughly $16-26 at current exchange rates.

Google Maps works for navigation but misnames some lanes in the old city. Locals reference landmarks, not addresses. "Near Jagdish Temple" or "behind Fateh Prakash Palace" will get you farther than a pin drop. Two-wheelers dominate traffic, and crosswalks are theoretical at best. The smell of diesel mixes with wet stone and frying pakoras at every intersection. If you arrive during monsoon, roads near Chetak Circle flood briefly after heavy downpours. Water drains within an hour, but traffic stalls completely in the meantime. Plan around afternoon storms, or sit one out at a rooftop cafe overlooking Pichola. The warm chai and the sound of rain on corrugated tin might be the most honest introduction to how the city works.
