What's a good 3-day itinerary for Yogyakarta?

Base yourself in Prawirotaman and divide Yogyakarta by direction. Day 1 covers the Kraton, Taman Sari, and Malioboro on foot. Day 2 heads east to Prambanan when it opens at 7am, then Plaosan and sunset at Ratu Boko. Day 3 goes northwest to Borobudur with a hired driver. Come back for silver workshops and charcoal-wok noodles in Kotagede.

Most international flights now land at Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo, about 45 km west of the city. The airport train to Tugu station takes roughly 40 minutes: take it and ignore the taxi touts in the YIA arrivals hall. Set up an eSIM before you fly so Grab and Gojek work at the gate; both apps fix the fare up front, which means no haggling on day one. Stay in Prawirotaman, the cafe strip south of the Kraton, rather than on Jalan Malioboro. Prawirotaman quiets down after 10pm and sits about 2 km from the palace, and it puts you on the right side of town for Kotagede on Day 3. If you land after noon, push Day 1's palace morning to the next day. The Kraton shuts by early afternoon, and a jet-lagged 3pm arrival cannot rescue it.

Heat dictates the order of everything here. At 2pm on 24 September 2026 the city read 35.8°C with 26% humidity. The andesite courtyards at Prambanan throw that heat straight back at your shins, which is why every temple slot below starts at opening time and every afternoon includes a hotel break between noon and 3pm. Prambanan was built around 850 and is the priority of the three days. Its 47-metre Shiva shrine is the tallest structure on the plain. At 7am you will hear roosters in the rice fields instead of tour-group loudspeakers. Sewu is covered by the same ticket, 800 metres north, and most visitors skip it: a mistake, because Sewu's rows of guardian shrines are quieter and cooler under the morning shade.

Menu anxiety in Yogyakarta mostly comes down to three dishes. Gudeg is young jackfruit stewed for hours in palm sugar and coconut milk: sweet and faintly smoky. If sweet-savoury food worries you, ask at Gudeg Yu Djum on Jalan Wijilan for extra sambal krecek, a chilli-hot stew of crisp cow skin. Kopi joss at Angkringan Lik Man is black coffee with a glowing lump of charcoal dropped in; it hisses, smells of woodsmoke and usually costs under IDR 10,000. Bakmi Jawa at Mbah Gito is cooked one portion at a time over a charcoal wok, so expect a 30- to 45-minute wait on Saturday nights. The rate on 23 September 2026 was 1 USD to about 17,795 IDR. At that rate a full warung meal rarely goes above IDR 50,000, which is under US$3.

Two things catch first-timers out. Around Taman Sari, friendly men on becaks will say the palace is closed today, or that a student batik exhibition ends tomorrow. The palace is open. The 'exhibition' is a shop with tourist prices. Say no and walk on to the Kraton ticket office on Jalan Rotowijayan. The second catch is Borobudur. Climbing its upper terraces now needs a separate timed ticket booked online, with a daily quota of roughly 1,200 climbers. Staff hand you woven upanat sandals at the gate. The cheaper ground-level ticket covers only the base and the gardens. Book the climb slot before you leave home. Then hire a driver through your Prawirotaman guesthouse, which typically costs IDR 600,000 to 800,000 for the day with fuel included.
