Where should I stay in Yogyakarta?
Book Prawirotaman for a first trip to Yogyakarta. The street sits about 2km south of the Kraton, and its boutique hotels charge $30-70 a night. After 10pm it goes quiet. Choose the Sosrowijayan lanes by Tugu station only if your train gets in late. For colonial comfort, pay $70-110 on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman.
Most first-timers should stay in Prawirotaman. The main street and its parallel lane, Prawirotaman II, run about 2km south of the Kraton, the sultan's palace complex founded in 1756. A Grab car to Malioboro costs IDR 20,000-30,000, around $1.10-1.70, for a 10-minute ride. Boutique rooms at Greenhost or Adhisthana cost $30-70. At the 23 September 2026 rate of 17,795 rupiah to the dollar, that is roughly IDR 530,000-1,250,000. In the morning the Jalan Parangtritis warung carts smell of clove kretek smoke and frying tempeh. The evenings on Prawirotaman are quiet: cafe chatter and the odd motorbike rather than Malioboro's constant horns. The weak point is walking. Reaching the Kraton on foot takes 25 minutes, and in the 35.8°C heat recorded here on 24 September 2026 that walk gets rough by 11am. Plan on two short Grab rides a day instead.
Malioboro makes sense for one kind of traveler: the late arrival. Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) sits 45km west in Kulon Progo, and the airport train takes about 40 minutes to Tugu station. From the platforms, the Sosrowijayan lanes, Gang I and Gang II, are a 5-minute walk south. Their guesthouses charge $12-25, with thin mattresses and ceiling fans that move the humid air around without cooling it. Jalan Malioboro is the real trouble. Becak drivers ring their bells and batik touts work the whole 2km stretch down to Fort Vredeburg, a museum since 1987. When someone invites you to a 'free batik exhibition' near Malioboro, you will end up in a shop with inflated prices. If your train lands after 9pm, sleep one night in Sosrowijayan and move to Prawirotaman the next morning.
For a higher budget, head to Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. The Phoenix Hotel there, an MGallery property in a 1918 colonial building about 1km east of Tugu, costs $70-110, and its courtyard pool stays shaded through the afternoon. Hotel Tentrem on Jalan AM Sangaji is the top tier in Yogyakarta at $110-150. Skip the student district along Jalan Kaliurang near Universitas Gadjah Mada. Cheap rooms and good coffee, yes, but in afternoon traffic it can take 30 minutes by car to reach the Kraton. Skip the rooms near Prambanan too. The Hindu temple dates to 850 and is 17km east, and the Borobudur sunrise tours, 40km northwest, pick up from Prawirotaman hotels before 4am anyway. Solo travelers should know that Yogyakarta scores 5.8/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). The lit, cafe-lined Prawirotaman strip feels safer after dark than the unlit Sosrowijayan alleys.
Recommended neighborhoods
Prawirotaman
The first-timer pick. Boutique hotels like Greenhost and Adhisthana anchor the neighborhood, warung breakfasts line Jalan Parangtritis and nights are quiet, with a short Grab ride north to the Kraton and Malioboro.
Sosrowijayan (Gang I and Gang II)
Backpacker lanes a short walk from Tugu station. Fine for one night after a late train from YIA, but rooms are basic and the Malioboro touts start at your door.
Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and Kotabaru
The colonial-era district east of Tugu, home to the Phoenix Hotel. Choose it for shaded pools, leafy Dutch-built streets and higher prices than Prawirotaman.
Skip these areas
- Jalan Malioboro frontage: Hotels facing Jalan Malioboro get becak bells, batik touts and traffic noise late into the night. Stay on a side lane or move south to Prawirotaman.
- Jalan Kaliurang (north, near UGM): This student district near Universitas Gadjah Mada has cheap rooms and good cafes, but in afternoon traffic it sits far from the Kraton and the old-city sights.
- Prambanan village: Rooms beside the temple save no real time, because the tours pick up from Prawirotaman anyway. Evenings are dead and eating options are thin.
