What's happening in Punta Cana this week?

Punta Cana runs on resort and flight schedules rather than any festival calendar. Saturday is changeover day, which means the airport and the Bávaro road are at their worst around midday, while Sunday belongs to Dominican families at Playa Macao. The Saona Island boats are best on weekday mornings. In hurricane season, plan for humid heat and short afternoon downpours.

Saturday shapes everything else in Punta Cana. Most all-inclusive packages from the US, Canada and Europe run Saturday to Saturday, so Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) tends to fill with charter arrivals between 11am and 3pm, and the immigration hall under its palm-thatch roofs can feel airless and slow. If you can, land on a Tuesday or Wednesday, when the queues are shorter and the taxi rank outside arrivals is calmer. Book a fixed-price transfer, or check the posted fare before you get in: an unbooked car costs far more for the drive to Bávaro, which takes about 25 minutes. On changeover day the front desks in Bávaro and Cap Cana also run late, and rooms are often not ready until 3pm. Put your swimwear in your carry-on and head to the pool. Spend day one sleeping off the flight, and book the Saona catamaran for day three.

Tuesday through Friday is excursion week. The Saona Island boats leave from Bayahibe, roughly 90 minutes south of Bávaro by road, so hotel pickups start between 6:30 and 7:30am, and you will smell diesel and sunscreen in the minibus well before you see the sea. Go on a weekday. Saturday and Sunday boats tend to run fuller, with Dominican groups and portable speakers. Afternoons are a different story in the wet season: a 20 to 40 minute downpour often hits Bávaro between 2pm and 5pm, drumming on the beach-bar palapas before the sun comes back. Do the morning activities first, like buggy rides through the red mud around Macao or a swim in the cold, clear water of Hoyo Azul in Cap Cana's Scape Park. Seaweed is the other weekly variable. Sargassum reaches the east-facing beaches in brown mats that smell faintly of sulphur, and in some weeks Cabeza de Toro is clear while Uvero Alto is buried. Ask your resort's beach staff at 8am which stretch is clean.

Evenings have a pattern too. From Thursday to Saturday, Downtown Punta Cana, the open-air mall on the Boulevard Turístico del Este, fills up, and Coco Bongo's late acrobatic show tends to sell out on Friday and Saturday. For something less staged, try Los Corales in Bávaro, where the small bars and restaurants are a short walk apart and the merengue from the colmados is louder on Friday night. Sunday is the Dominican beach day. Families drive out to Playa Macao with coolers of Presidente beer, and roadside stands fry fish and tostones that taste of salt and lime, so expect car radios, slow traffic through Verón, and a scramble for parking after 11am. If you would rather go to church than the beach, Sunday mass at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Higüey, about an hour inland, draws pilgrims from across the Dominican Republic.

Carry Dominican pesos this week. At the latest reading the rate was 61.4994 pesos to the US dollar, and colmados, motoconchos and the Higüey market all price in pesos while resort tour desks quote dollars at a worse rate, so bring RD$ notes for anything outside the resort gate. The latest overnight reading was 27.2°C under clear skies, with 79% humidity making it feel like 31.5°C, which is typical of the wet season on this coast. During the Atlantic hurricane season, check the National Hurricane Center's seven-day outlook before you pay for a non-refundable Saona or Samaná trip.
