How do I get to Punta Cana?

Punta Cana International (PUJ) is the only airport most visitors will use. It sits at the southern end of the resort corridor, a short transfer from the Bávaro strip and its concentration of all-inclusive hotels. The terminal itself feels like an oversized tiki bar. Thatched-roof canopies cover the gates, and warm salt air moves freely through the open-sided arrivals hall. Immigration lines can stretch to 45 minutes during peak afternoon banks when 3 or 4 wide-bodies land within the same hour. That first wall of 81% humidity when you step off the jet bridge is honest advertising for what the next week will feel like. La Romana's Casa de Campo airport (LRM), 85 km west, handles seasonal charters and private jets, but it is not worth the detour unless your resort is near Bayahíbe. Santo Domingo's Las Américas (SDQ), 195 km west along the Autovía del Este, is the country's main hub. A 2.5-hour drive east on toll roads makes SDQ a fallback, not a first choice.

From the US East Coast, PUJ is one of the shortest Caribbean flights. JetBlue and American fly nonstop from JFK and MIA in about 3.5 hours, with low-season round-trips (May through early November) running $250 to $450 and December-through-April peak fares climbing to $400 to $650. Delta connects from Atlanta in 3 hours 40 minutes. Spirit and Frontier work the same corridors at $180 to $350, though baggage fees tend to narrow the savings. From the Midwest, United runs seasonal nonstops from Chicago O'Hare at $350 to $550. Air Canada and WestJet cover Toronto YYZ and Montréal YUL for CAD 450 to 750 year-round, and winter charters from Calgary and Vancouver add capacity between December and April. Mind you, Saturday departures from all markets carry a $50 to $100 premium because of the all-inclusive resort changeover cycle.

European connections are thinner. Condor runs year-round from Frankfurt (FRA) at €450 to €750 round-trip, about 9.5 hours eastbound. Edelweiss covers Zurich (ZRH) on a seasonal schedule. From Madrid, Iberia and Air Europa offer the only regular nonstops at €400 to €650, roughly 8.5 hours. TUI and World2Fly add winter charters from London Gatwick and several Scandinavian gateways between November and April. If you're coming from the UK during summer, the realistic routing is a connection through Miami or Madrid. Low-season windows in May through June and September through mid-November tend to cut fares 30 to 40 percent across every market. Worth noting, Punta Cana has no rail or ferry access. You fly in, or you don't come.

Nearly every all-inclusive resort along the Bávaro to Uvero Alto strip runs its own airport shuttle, and the transfer is usually folded into your package rate. Check before you pre-book a separate ride. For independent rentals in El Cortecito or Los Corales, a taxi from PUJ costs $25 to $35, with posted rates on a board outside the arrivals exit where warm evening air mixes with diesel exhaust and sunscreen. The local currency is the Dominican peso, currently around 59 DOP to 1 USD, but US dollars work at nearly every business in the tourist corridor. That said, you'll get 5 to 10 percent more value paying in pesos at restaurants and colmados outside the hotel zones. Grab pesos from the Banco Popular ATM inside the terminal before you leave. It charges lower fees than the Euronet machines positioned closer to the exit doors.
