Where should I stay in Rio de Janeiro?

Ipanema is the right neighborhood for a first trip to Rio de Janeiro. It runs about 15 blocks between Arpoador Rock on the east and the Jardim de Alah canal on the west, where Leblon begins. General Osório metro station sits at Praça General Osório, 20 minutes from Centro and 35 from Maracanã Stadium, which opened for the 1950 World Cup and still fills with 78,000 voices on match nights. Rua Visconde de Pirajá is the main commercial street. You'll find açaí shops, pharmacies, and padarias where the coffee is strong and the pão de queijo arrives warm by 7am. The crossstreets around Rua Farme de Amoedo and Rua Joana Angélica tend to be quieter for sleeping. Expect $90-180 per night for a mid-range hotel. The Fasano on Rua Vieira Souto runs $400+ with floor-to-ceiling Atlantic views. Ipanema's honest trade-off is weekend bar noise around Rua Vinícius de Moraes, near the spot where Tom Jobim reportedly wrote "The Girl from Ipanema" in 1962.

Copacabana saves you 30-40% and has far more hotel inventory. The 4.5km beach crescent runs from the Forte de Copacabana at the south end, built in 1914, to Leme at the north.
