Rio's cafe map is not one story but three overlapping ones. Downtown, near the old Praça Quinze and the Sete de Setembro corridor, coffee comes with pastry counters and marble-topped rooms that have been feeding office workers and civil servants for generations. In Copacabana and Botafogo, the cafes are neighbourhood machines: open early, closed late, built for a beach city that eats standing up as often as sitting down. Then there is the Zona Sul of Jardim Botânico, Leblon and Gávea, where the rooms get quieter, the pour-over gets slower, and the check gets longer.
